Hi, Connor is on the trail again! I am giving Connor's opinion on Heinz Baby food in Jars and Cans for 8 month olds.
Connor has tried many different babyfood products and does, at the moment, prefer Heinz jars to cans. Heinz do a wide variety of flavours, they have veggie alternatives as well and they range from 55p to 80p depending on where you buy them - his favourite at the moment is Chicken and Fruit Rissotto. He find's the jars are a little more runny than the cans and are easiler to swallow as the cans tend to be a little thick and glupey. I find that jars are very convenient as a working mum. Connor often has lunch or dinner at a child minders and these jars are easy to pack in a lunch box and carry around, they are also ideal for days out, as most restaurants will heat these up for you in a jug of hot water. If you are going out for the day I would recommend that you ask the food to be kept in the jar when warmed, this way you know nothing has been tampered with and that every thing is as clean as you would like it to be. I know that sounds obsesive or paranoid but I once read about a baby that got salt poisioning from a jealousy waitress in a restaurant, she couldn't have children and was really bitter, any way, just a quick warning.
However, I find that home made food is a lot cheaper and more flavoursome - do be careful however, to make sure that you don't over load any food that you make your self with salt particularly and other strong seasoning and you should avoid using peanut oil. You can use herb's though and these will increase your baby's tastes and toleraces for different foods, it will also make it easier for you when weaning from baby food to normal food. But the general consensuous (sorry about the spelling, I think that is wrong) is less is more. I make my own shepards pie and chicken and sweetcorn with mash potato and gravy. Connor love's both of these. You can also make your own deserts/afters. I puree fruit which has been cooked in a little water and not a lot of sugar. I also make up custard and add chocholate sprinkles or hundreds and thousands. His favourite at the moment is crushed chocolate digestives and Angel Delight. I would add that I only make Connor's dinners and afters now that he is over 8 month's old and would not recommend that you give home made food to a baby younger than this unless you are happy about the content etc., as I am not an expert on what baby's should or shouldn't have (except for common sense) I think that when baby's are very young it is often better left to the experts. And if you do make your own foods and use meat in the recipe, you should make sure that the food is piping hot when reheated and then left to cool down to the right temperature, to ensure that you don't give your baby food poisioning. This may seem like a lot of hard work but it will make it easier for you when weaning from baby food to normal food as the taste's will not be so different.

I can well remember going through this stage with my kids, they used to love Heinz too. Now my youngest is nearly five and I miss the weaning stage, though at the time it is very messy!!! Interesting opinion :-)
Advantages: Variety, knowledge that you are giving your child good food, kids love it Disadvantages: glass jars, price, heating up the jars,(my kids refused to eat it if cold!!)
