Thanks to my dear old nan, I've just discovered a lovely dessert in a tin, of all things! My brother and me go to nan's regularly on Sundays and she usually makes us something nice every time we visit. Sometimes she makes the oddest of things and can be a bit of a 'Mrs Croppley' (aka Vicar of Dibley) in the kitchen, but my brother and me always 'eat up and shut up' - (mum's orders) and always complement her on her culinary skills.
In recent weeks, she's presented us with delights such as cream cheese on rice crackers and in the middle she places (very carefully) a prawn cocktail flavoured crisp! Every week without fail (for about the last 3 years) she's given my brother and me 'Chunky Chicken' sandwiches on white bread. We always pretend to eat them with relish, but dad just can't stomach them at all and pretends to eat them by wrapping one up in his hankie and putting it in his pocket!
Last weekend nan excelled herself though, and gave my brother and me a real treat in a tin - a Heinz Sticky Toffee Pudding, and not between us, but we had a whole one each. She said that her friend Ruby has been buying them for ages and they're dead easy to cook, so as they were on offer in her corner shop (buy one get one free) she got two of them to 'test out' on my brother and me!
The tin says they're supposed to go in the microwave. You're meant to open the tin, tip out the contents and put them in a microwavable bowl, and put in the microwave for a couple of minutes. As easy as that! Unfortunately, although nan does have a microwave, she very rarely uses it as she says it's "not right" to be able to cook stuff that quickly and we think she's secretly scared of it!!
Nan's method of cooking this pud was to pierce the top of the tin with her knackered old tin opener, and then place it in a pan of hot water to simmer, for what seemed like the entire afternoon. In fact, it took so long, that I had to keep on boiling the kettle and re-filling the pan as the water was running dry. Nan said that she wanted to make sure it was thoroughly cooked through, as she didn't want to be responsible for giving my brother and me food poisoning!
Eventually, nan decided the puds were probably cooked properly, emptied them into a couple of bowls, and presented them to us with a big jug of hot custard to pour over the top! Delicious! The smell was out of this world. There was a strong aroma of lovely sweet syrup and once it had cooled down a bit we took our first mouthfuls. Nan said she didn't want to try any herself as she thought they would be too sweet for her. They were sweet, but not overly so. They were perfect. The taste and texture of these little puds was out of this world. They had stayed in shape perfectly too and weren't at all sloppy, considering the fact that she had boiled them to within an inch of their lives! I ate mine in one go, without talking once, until I'd finished the lot. I was very hungry by the time we'd got to sit down to eat them and I always think things taste much better when you're hungry anyway.
These puds are very satisfying and fill your tummy right to the top. They don't look that big when they're sitting in your bowl and it looks like you don't get much pud for your money, but they are extremely filling. I have to say though, that if nan had said, "Penelope, would you like another one?" I wouldn't have refused. They are very very moreish.
I had a look at the tin, and it basically is fairly plain and just explains what is inside, i.e. Sticky Toffee Pudding and how to cook it. I had a look at the calorie content and it says that there are 278 calories per 100g. They come in 300g tins, so I guess once you've poured over the topping of your choice, then they probably do contain quite a lot of calories, so are probably no good if you're watching your weight. I guess you could also eat these just by themselves, with nothing on top, as they're not dry at all and the sticky toffee probably tastes just fine on it's own. Another good point is that they contain no GM ingredients, so also good for the health conscious person who wantsto be environmentally friendly, too.
I've since seen these in Tesco and they are 99p each, so I guess nan got quite a good bargain with her 'buy one get one free' offer! I've also persuaded mum to buy a few for our house, but Tesco only had the chocolate and spotted dick varieties. We've not yet tried these, but I'm sure that when we do, they'll taste just as lovely as nan's sticky toffee variety, except we'll be cooking ours the way nature intended - in the microwave!!
Advantages: Delicious Taste Disadvantages: Lots of calories

===How I Came About Buying It===
Perhaps you have realised from my past reviews, my family and I are partial too a dessert every now and then, okay, more like every night. Sometimes my mum will bake a huge apple pie, or make up a batch of pancakes drizzled in toffee sauce. Other times, my mum will shove a big bowl of angel delight with mars bar pieces onto the table, or on other times we will be presented with a ... ...Dinner was due to be ready in half an hour, and my mum came up into my room looking awful flustered. I asked her what was wrong, and she told me she had, had a dilemma with the angel delight, it hadn't set properly. What on earth was she going to do for dessert. We went downstairs and I searched through the cupboards frantically trying to find a dessert that would do the four of us for pudding that night. That's when I came across them. Five tins ...

Advantages: Convenient, Comforting Disadvantages: Not enough toffee sauce
...I’d not had one of Heinz finest for a while so decided to drop a couple of the sticky toffee variety into my basket, after all I’d had a tough day at work and was in no mood to cook anything vaguely time consuming or healthy for tea. I was slightly amused on readying the pudding to eat – later that night - that the tin gives you instructions on how to open it – I’d of thought people who were unable to work that out shouldn’t be around hot objects ... ...a company as large as Heinz would have dealt with. Finished, the pudding left me sated and content, just as comfort food should. Twenty-four hours later, and in the name of research I decide to eat the second of my purchased puddings as god intended – cold and straight from the tin. I wonder if this is the best of ideas as I remove the top of the tin to reveal a jelly like toffee sauce sitting atop a sorry looking lump of sponge. Unperturbed (and ...

Advantages: Tasty, easy to cook, good value for money Disadvantages: Not good for the waistline
I do enjoy my puddings but quite often after cooking a dinner, it is nice to have a dessert that doesn't require much preparation.
Packaging
As I already mentioned, this product comes in a tin. On the front of the tin there is a rather appealing picture of the Sticky Toffee Pudding as well as all the usual information such as how to cook it. The tins are 300g in size.
Cooking
This product is cooked in the microwave. To cook, you need to take ... ...a microwavable bowl. Then you simply place it in the microwave for 2-4 minute (depending on the power of your microwave). It really is that simple.
Cost
These puddings cost 99p each from Tesco which I think is fairly reasonable for a pudding. Quite often, Tesco have this product on special offer where you can get 5 puddings for £3.
The Pudding
The pudding is fairly large for one person but maybe a little too small for two people to share. Before ...

Advantages: Delicious (for a tinned pudding)... Disadvantages: ...but has a sort of flat, dull flavour
I bought this out of necessity when I was on a college trip in Jersey.
Being hopelessly unskilled in everything culinary, I bought it thinking it would be a doddle to cook. It was, once two friends helped me interpret the instructions!
I don't think the instructions aren't difficult to follow - I suppose for the complete beginner anything's difficult!
What really confused me was the microvaving - I am not in possession of a microwave at home, ... ...course, the pudding can be cooked in the oven, but there wasn't enough time.
Upon opening the tin, the sweet smell of the pudding hit my nose and put my tastebuds on the alert. The pudding looked soggy and stodgy, but still absolutely tantalising. I kept trying to sneak bits, much to the annoyance of my two kitchen assisstants!
Once shut away in the microwave, I licked the juice off the remnants of the tin, being very careful to avoid the sharp ...

I have always been more of a desert person than a starter or main course person. I am, one of these people who always look at the desert menu first when in a restaurant so I can plan my main course round what I am likely to have so I am not too full for my desert.
I have to say that apart from apple crumble one of my favourite deserts is stickytoffeepudding with either custard or ice cream. So I was so happy to make this superb find of stickytoffeepudding in a tin by the famous baked bean company Heinz. I am not really used to buying my deserts in a tin, I usually opt for the frozen variety but they take up so much room in my small freezer I was pleased to come across this product as I can store them in my kitchen cupboards and they take the minimal of space up!
Heinz makes several other tinned deserts, to name a few are ...

like that one-, StickyToffee and Treacle. Oh how I love the great traditional StickyToffee and Treacle versions.
The most popular size seems to be the 313 gr tin and I think that some of the supermarkets like Kwik Save,Tesco and Asda, often do special offers on these British delicacies. If I remember correctly you can sometimes these puds for about Stg0.95 pounds. What marvellous value.
The tinned variety from Heinz is such a breeze to prepare. Just dump it in a saucepan, boil the water, and hey presto, you have a simply magnificent dessert. You could plop some Vanilla ice cream over it but my preference is to have it with piping hot custard.
