Perhaps you have realised from my past reviews, my family and I are partial too a dessert every now and then, okay, more like every night. Sometimes my mum will bake a huge apple pie, or make up a batch of pancakes drizzled in toffeesauce. Other times, my mum will shove a big bowl of angel delight with mars bar pieces onto the table, or on other times we will be presented with a chocolate mousse or chocolate pudding. This night however was different. Dinner
was due to be ready in half an hour, and my mum came up into my room looking awful flustered. I asked her what was wrong, and she told me she had, had a dilemma with the angel delight, it hadn't set properly. What on earth was she going to do for dessert. We went downstairs and I searched through the cupboards frantically trying to find a dessert that would do the four of us for pudding that night. That's when I came across them. Five tins of HEINZ STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. PERFECT!
Price & Availability
My mum explained she had bought these a few days ago in Tesco, as she thought they looked interesting and would do on a night we were in a rush to go out for our after school activities. I questioned my mum, and she explained that they had cost 96p each from Tesco, but she had bought them 5 for £3, which in my opinion was quite a saving. These are most probably available from all supermarkets, and if your lucky you may stumble across them in your local newsagent or gas station.
Preparation/Cooking
When I first saw these in the cupboard, I have to admit I was rather unconvinced that these would live up to there good reviews and yummy looking picture on the tin. I was also rather intrigued on how these little beauties would be prepared. Explanation- well they were pretty easy to make. I tipped each pudding out into a bowl and popped each in the microwave. Each pudding was to stay in the microwave for roughly 3-4 minutes. Unfortunately this meant we all received our puddings at different times, but this didn't matter, it didn't stop the pleasure being so delicious.
THE FIVE SENSES
Touch
Thought I'd start with TOUCH as it's probably the most irrelevant. I didn't actually touch this before it was microwaved, but once it was heated up it was a soft "spongey" texture and really quite easy to sink my spoon into.
Sight
My first impressions of these puddings, were that they were very large. Well definitely large if they were for only one person. Before I put them in the microwave they looked a golden, but not overly golden colour the sauce around was a delicious looking caramelly colour. I couldn't wait to tuck into so I popped them into the microwave. Once the microwave went PING I took them out and woow they looked delicious. The sponge looked light and airy, yet it looked positively full tasting, and the caramel/toffee sauce oozed out, but didn't overpower the whole look of the thing.
Sound
This didn't make a sound- funnily enough. Only the sound of my tummy rumbling and tastebuds shouting at me could be heard.
Smell
On removing the dessert from the microwave, a delicious aroma met my nose. At first it didn't have a distinct smell, it just smelt of, basically home baking, but as I got closer and nestled my nose in further to the bowl, a delicious toffee/butterscotch smell met me and it set my nose alight. It was an extremely sweet smell and my tastebuds couldn't wait for much longer.....
Taste
The final and most important sense of all. TASTE. I plonked my little pudding into my bowl, and decided, it needed a little something else. So I scooped a little dollop of good quality Cornish vanilla ice cream in to my bowl and dug in. Firstly it was my duty to taste the pudding on its own. I scooped up a chunk of sponge, and scooped up a bit of the toffee sauce. The sponge was light and delicate and didn't taste too toffee-ish but it had a lovely sweet taste too it. The toffee sauce was a delight. It was extremely sweet and perhaps quite sickly, but for my tastebuds it was perfect. There was also a slight creamyness to the sauce giving it the perfect balance. Next I scooped up another peice of sponge, a trickle of the sauce, and this time a little block of the slowly melting (due to the hotness of the pudding), vanilla ice cream. I popped it into my mouth, and the mixture of hot and cold was brilliant. The ice cream was still to be tasted but the toffee pudding stood out the most, however not overpowering the ice cream. I thought overall the taste was beautiful and would definitely have eaten more than one of these.
Of course these puddings are not the most healthiest, and if you are watching your weight, i wouldn't recommend them, or if you insisted I would only eat these as a special treat or as a reward. The back of the tin states that 100g contains 278 calories, and due to the fact that these tins are 300g, you are getting a fair amount of calories, add in your ice cream, and you are overloaden with them!
Recommendation
Definitely recommended, however not to people on a diet. The taste was definitely the best part and well worth the 97p my mum paid for them!!
