It begins directly where the last one left off, the problem of the impending fate of of the whole universe, and Dervish near to death.

There are some minor moans, hence the 4 stars.I feel Darren Shan lowers his writing potential too much for the younger reader. The books, as advertised, contain stuff of nightmare's.Yet the majority of 9 year old's could read his books with ease.I feel at parts certain scene's, and battle's, deserve more than the casual "blood and guts were flying everywhere". In relation to this, in a few scene's he almost ruins the atmosphere. For one, there should have been suspense, but all seriousness is lost when Grubb's say's that while werewolves hate flying in planes "they enjoy flying in helicopters! Werewolves - go figure!"
To me this isn't funny, nor does it make me feel any closer to Grubb's. Enough moaning however, these are minor gripes which do not ruin the book - it is a brilliant book. 4.5/5 stars from me!

The writing is taut and effecive, and several stand alone scenes are magnificent. The conclusion, had it been published as a stand alone novella, would have been wonderful.
Nothing happens, and there is some nasty use of forced incest as a means to create a tawdry shock. Oh, and nothing happens. (*)
