Hellboy

Advantages: Witty, sharp, strong acting, fun story.
Disadvantages: Drags slightly at times.

Hellboy isn't your conventional comic book film. Aside from Spider-Man and the X-Men films, most of these comic book films have been dead on arrival. So leave your patriotic superhero stereotypes at the door, and enjoy one of the more original offerings from the recent overkill of comic book adaptations. I went into Hellboy expecting very little, and was overjoyed to find a truly enjoyable film awaiting me. The film centres on the titular Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a demon who arrived via a portal from hell opened by the Nazis at the end of World War II. Raised by the professor (John Hurt) that finds him, he grows into a defender of good against the combined evil of Nazis and Rasputin. Aiding Hellboy in his quest are Abe Sapien (Doug Jones, but voiced by David Hyde-Pierce), an aquatic mind reader, and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), who starts ...

Hellboy

Advantages: Great effects, make up, action pieces
Disadvantages: nothing

Hellboy was first seen in the incredible comic series of the same name by Mike Mignola. Hellboy is about a demon (Ron Perlman) who fights supernatural forces. Named Hellboy, by the agent that dscovered him as a baby (John Hurt), he is raised as a son to which when we meet him in movie form he is at the age of a teenager. Hellboy works for the B.P.R.D (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) whose job it is to protect innocent bystanders like yourself and I from the powers of darkness. Think Men in Black but with demons instead of aliens. Perlman, a sci-fi/horror veteran starring in such movies as Alien: Resurrection and Blade 2 is perfectly cast as the 'giant baby'. He works alongside Abe Sapien, a fish'like human with gills to breath. Voiced by Frasier's David Hyde Pierce, he is a somewhat comic relief and voice of reason ...

Hellboy Review

Advantages: Great characters, engaging storyline
Disadvantages: Probably a bit boring if you don't like these types of films

Hellboy is another foray into the genre of comic book films, hold on though, this one is actually quite good. Very good in fact. Ron Perlman plays Hellboy, a demon summoned by the Nazis during the final days of WWII. The Allies raid the camp where the ceremony is taking place and find what the Nazis thought would bring about the end of the world. Joining the Allied forces, Hellboy eventually grows to adulthood, serving the cause of good rather than evil. This really is Ron Perlmans 'Godfather' role. Watching him play this witty, funny but slightly childish demon you can't imagine anyone doing a better job, it is casting at its very best. Hellboy is aided by Abe Sapien, a fellow 'freak' who can only be described as half man, half fish, and Liz Sherman, a girl who can manipulate fire. All these actors have great chemistry together ...
