Review of "Hergest Ridge - Mike Oldfield"
Having been released after the Absolute monster that was Tubular Bells the follow up was always going to be tricky.
Firstly there was the issue of trying to equal or improve on the quality of T.B. and then of course there would always be the build 'em up and then pull 'em down gutter press journo's, jealous of any success story that they didn't have a hand in.
Add to that the oil shortage of the early 70's which brought about the production of poor quality vinyl, and the emergence of Oldfield's panic attacks and (perversely after his massive success) his lack of self-confidence and to be honest Hergest Ridge was doomed to failure.
What we haven't allowed for is his outstanding talent for both writing and playing music of a quality rarely heard. With his mental fragility came a gentle beauty that was captured in his music in a way none other could. Many believe it was no coincidence that his finest work was completed before a self-assertiveness course strengthened him mentally.
There are no pop songs here, no hooks, nothing to sing along with, indeed it is probably his most rustic of creations .But if you want music full of emotion then look no further than this and his third opus, Ommadawn.
