...of the composite character. In this work he divides up what are broadly speaking the Nietzschean Here Hermann Hesse treads on familiar ground. In countless of his works before he uses the technique concepts of the Dionysian and the Apollonian, by embodying each half in an individual character, one called Narcissus and the other Goldmund. Hesse has done this more convincingly in other works like “Steppenwolf” with Harry and Hermine or in “Demian” with Emil and Demian, but it is still not unsuccessful here, merely unoriginal. If you are a Hesse fan you will not find this one of his best....
