Launched: 2005 Group: Fruity Floral
It was on one of my winter lunch breaks when I discovered Un Jardin Sur Le Nil Eau de Toilette at Beauty Base perfume / cosmetics discounter in Ealing Broadway. Just one sniff at the atomizer and I knew that it contained my favourite exotic fruit / scent rarely found in fragrances: mango, and in this case, the fresher, cleaner green variety. A test, then later, in spring, purchase on Ebay followed.
The house Hermes
Hermes, the name itself sends flashing impulses to the brain of the emblematic 'Hermes scarf' introduced to the fashion world and the public in the 1930s. Established in Paris by Frenchman Thierry Hermes, the empire has always been known as the ultimate destination in couture, fashion accessories and since the launch of Caleche (1961) fragrance.
A simple, white carton box houses
this airy and light cologne adorned by watercolour impressions of the lotus flower and its leaves. The bottle is tall but stocky and heavy. It has a gradual green-yellow tint that could well be the colour of green mango skin as it goes from medium green to yellow. The golden coloured atomizer is capped with a transparent spherical top.
Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is the second concept fragrance following its sibling 'Un Jardin dans la Mediterranee' and was inspired by a journey down the River of the Nile.
Top notes: carrot, grapefruit, tomato, green mango
A mixture of clean, fresh and exotic citrus infused green mango scent hits my nose upon application. I tend to use the fragrance generously in the morning (4 - 5 sprays) as it tends to evaporate quickly. It refreshes the senses and is a perfect combination of fruity sweetness and crisp greenness. The fresh top notes of mango and citrus will characterize the scent throughout up to at least 6 hours and will still be in full swing even after the middles have fully developed. To me this is a sign of masterful blending and I have not come across this very often before.
After about an hour I start to distinguish an unmistakable tearose aroma which strongly reminds me of Paul Smith Rose. The peony then mingles with a sweet and deep lotus note and the still present crisp greenness of mango to create an exotic, mellow and somewhat bittersweet floral scent. This phase lasts for at least 3 hours depending on skin type or temperature. The fragrance then gradually loses its floral edge when after about 4 - 5 hours the dry down emerges.
Base notes: labdanum, iris, cinnamon, musk, frankincense
The most dominant notes in the drydown aren't floral - at least on my skin - but quite dry and woody. The overall impression however is warm, as the harsher, masculine scents are complemented by the clean and softening sweet scent of musk. Surprisingly, the perfectly well-blended and bittersweet fresh top notes can be identified in all three stage and still linger on with the dry down that a cooler day will stay on up to 6 - 8 hours - though it will have faded a lot by the end.
Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is a unique, fresh, elegant and modern fragrance where exotic, citrus freshness is woven across a delicate tissue of subtle, almost crispy and transparent floral notes.
To sum up, a crisp but exotic and subtle unisex cologne blended to perfection.
Price / Where to buy
In retail, this Eau de Toilette is particularly dear, in department stores the 50ml spray costs in the region of £50 - £60. I didn't see the 100ml variety in shops, the only reason of this I imagine would be not to send customers seeing the price tag run for the door. On Ebay or online discount fragrace stores a 100ml bottle sells for £30 - £37. For about £45 you could be the proud owner of the massive 200ml Eau de Toilette edition.
