I have been into fantasy & Dungeons and Dragons since I can remember. Always read the books, watched the films and played the computer games of that genre. When I saw the board game "Hero Quest" in my local Toys'R'Us I was like a child with a new toy, rushing all the way home.
I read the back of the box and it sounded like the type of game which both intrigued and entertained, but not for too long. Those who have played Dungeons and Dragons Role PlayingGames are aware that a game can last for several weeks or even months, however, Hero Quest usually lasts approximately 2 - 3 hours.
If you have ever played a computer version of Hero Quest (I had a copy for my Amiga years ago), the board game is very similar in that the four characters are the same, namely a Barbarian, an Elf, a Wizard and a Dwarf. Each of the characters take turns to roll dice and move that amount of spaces around the board, they may also search for either treasure or traps & secret doors. It may sound complicated but it is quite simple to learn the first levels and can get more complex as you play through the scenarios in the book supplied. I spiced up the game somewhat in that I carefully painted all the figures, items and monsters to make the game more realistic - it certainly worked because it now scares me every time I play :-)
Anyway, the game is controlled by a "Dungeon master" who is played by one of the players - he controls the game, monsters and any traps, etc.... The other players can take the roles of the four main characters. The game can have up to 5 players but you can still play with 2 people (one as the Dungeon master and the other plays the 4 main characters).
The game is simple, the board is set up into rooms by the Dungeon master before the game starts. only he/she knows where the monsters, traps and secret doors are before your character enters a room. You roll 2 die and move the character that amount of spaces on the board. The character can then fight any monsters in the room or if there are none, he can search for either treasure or traps & secret doors. The aim of each quest is laid out before hand and the characters must complete it and escape with their lives to finish the quest, any extra weapons, armour, treasures, money or spells they collect during their quest is theirs to keep on completion. If a character dies during the quest, another character in the same room can search for treasure and find everything the deceased has dropped.
Fighting is done with the help of 4 special die, a shield symbol signifies a defence, a skull symbol signifies an attack. This is quite simple to grasp also. The furniture which is laid out in the rooms can also be painted, as with the figures, this adds a little more realism to the game and spurs the imagination somewhat.
On top of the basic game, extra add-on packs can be purchased which include such horrors as evil wizards, fierce monsters and even extra troops !!!
This is not just another board game, this is a quest into darker places. Places where there is a world of difference between riches or death. A realm where one wrong move can spell disaster. Beware the evil of these places and embrace the magic for it will either be your making or your ruin....

I hate roleplaying and all that stuff - but I do like this game - I now have a virtually complete collection of everything you could possibly buy in connection with this game.
Personally I just like painting thefigures.
Still great game.
