The iPaq cradle pictured is that which comes in the box when purchasing a "new" iPaq from the 3800 range. As such, if you have the iPaq you will already have one of these devices and know how useful they are.
That said, a second cradle is extremely useful when you need to take work home on your iPaq. The second cradle at home is infinitely easier to use than fumbling with your work PC to disconnect the cradle, take it home and fumble with your home PC to go through the reverse process. And then you'll have to do it all again in the morning... With a second cradle you can download information to your iPaq, take the PDA home and dock it - a process that takes matter of seconds (not including journey time of course! ;) ).
This cradle has been thoughtfully provided with both serial and USB connections. The serial connection is relatively slow and probably only applicable to people with older PCs. The USB connection is a vast improvement on the serial by providing much faster data transfer and ease of connection - USB can be plugged and unplugged without rebooting your host PC. If you only have a serial cradle I would strongly recommend upgrading to one of these, you will be amazed at the improvement in data transfer times.
The cradle also features a small AC-in port on the rear which allows you to plug in the AC adaptor supplied with new iPaqs. This means that you can charge your PDA whilst synchronising data or whilst sat at your desk - very useful considering how quickly the battery goes flat on a pocket PC. However, you MUST resist the urge to continually dock and charge your iPaq using the cradle. The battery in the iPaq quickly wears out as there is no auto cut-off mechanism included and replacement batteries are very expensive. My employer has stacks of iPaqs with dead batteries as a result of overcharging whilst docked in the cradle.
When combined with the ActiveSync software, the cradle allows you to synchronise emails, documents, Internet Explorer favourites and backups in a very sime way.
If you need to synchronise your iPaq with two PCs or only have a serial cradle to start with, I would recommend buying one of these cradles. If not, give this one a miss.
