Hewlett Packard PA-8000 180 MHz processor board

...This is another package from Hewlett Packard which at the time when bought out was reasonable priced. Nowadays you can pickup a package like this between £100 and £250 depending on any upgrades. Usually the processor is around 600mhz and can be upgraded to around 1000mhz. The only problem with this machine is of the L2 cache installed on the main board. The more L2 cache the quicker and easier the processor can handle information. The maximum memory my machine could take was 512mb but not sure on the higher spec machines. My machine came with a scrolling mouse which many machines didn't have. All machines that i knew of came with Windows 98 but this can be wiped and Windows 2000 or even XP can easily be installed with 128mb memory. ...When you're evaluating this product please don't forget that it's probably only costing you £15/£20 pounds and it IS a budget processor. There is speed to be had in this processor but it's NOT 333 Mhz of speed. It's a cleverly multiplied low-end processor which has a very high effective speed. The best situation for this chip is where you could normally only fit a P166 Mhz chip. Older machines. Once excellent place for this chip is in network servers. Laugh all you will but .... You can pick-up a rack-mountable Compaq Proliant server which support 4 processors (P166) for about £250. Buy four of these and fit them and you've got an awesome little server for under £350. Add extra memory and a good HD system and you've got a VERY capabale multi-function server capable of sevicing over 1000 users on a LAN. I know this as I've done... Read review

Advantages: good system
Disadvantages: not very good monitors

...HP is a very good brand, so a director of my company decided to by some of them. Our company uses HP's products for 2 years and we see that we didn't mistake choosng HP Vectra. But in our computers after 2 years of using we have to repare monitors. Personally me use HP Vectra VL with P2-233 Mh in my office. Thou there are many faster processors, but this one is not worth than modern computers. There is a coupl words about design - it is very good, so there are no problems to put it in any place. I hope that HP will keep constructing so nice computers and we will use them for many years.... Read review
