I bought my Hewlett Packard Laserjet 5L printer 6 years ago and it still runs great. It's complicated and it just works. I've tens of thousands of sheets of paper through this thing and it just keeps on working. When the rollers got a little slick from use,I rubbed them down with some rubbing alcohol and they were good as new. I wish the bigger, more expensive HP printers at work were this reliable.
BAD POINTS Since I've had my Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5L it has not printed anything out for me. I plug it in to the wall socket, and the 3 lights come on, you try to print and it says it's committed an elegal act, and will now shut down. You plug it in to the circuit board on top of the desk, and 3 lights come on and won't print. When the 3 prong is in pluged into thw wall and I hit print 3 different color lights come on, and it says it has committed an elegal act, and will now shut down. If it's pluged into the circuit plug on top of the desk, and I hit print it does the same thing won't print, or attempt to. But these are minor problems and non of them affect the functions of this laser jet printer. OverAll comments The Hewlett Packard Laser Jet 5L printer is pretty good.
Advantages: Manages heavy workload, looks good Disadvantages: None to note
...alterative we whistled for back up and along came the HP LaserJet 1200 from the back office. Carefully manoeuvred into position by the worker of the back office, the HP LaserJet, never designed to be a workgroupprinter, was placed in the firing line. For a full week the agony of frontline printer action was levelled at it and hey ... it did pretty well. Apart from a couple of jams when it neared the end of its 260 page paper tray, the printer survived the week before hurrying back to its day job in the back office. (I guess its now doing the printer equivalent of lighting an occasional cigar, throwing its feet on the desk and boring the pants off the other peripherals with tales of daring and stamina.)
Seriously though – this is a personal printer and therefore not intended for vast outputs and yet for a short spell it performed just...

Advantages: Reliable, robust, fast Disadvantages: A bit bulky
...to install on the network- all it required was a TCP port, IP address etc. and it was working within minutes. The other useful thing is of course the good driver support for HP devices in virtually all versions of Windows. I believe this printer will in fact work for such ancient incarnations of Windows such as Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (not that that is much use to most peoplethese days). The drivers for HP Laserjet 5 printers can be installed pretty much automatically, especially if you're connecting to it over the network from a PC.
Page printing is fairly quick at 12 pages per minute. There are faster printers around, but generally this speed is sufficient for most purposes.
The toner (this is the powder that's transferred onto the paper when printing takes place) and the fuser unit (the device that basically engraves the toner onto...

Advantages: Print Quality Disadvantages: Cost of Toner Cartridge
...The HP laserjet 4000 printer is an ideal laser printer for a small office workgroup. The printer comes with a variety of options all of which cost extra and include dual paper cartridge, duplex paper handler, postscript cartridge and network option. If you chose everthing, then the cost of the printer start to mount. However, the 1200dpi print quality is very good and the duplex paper handling unit makes printing a professional looking report easy. However, the duplexing unit slows down the speed of the printing.
The second paper cartridge is a usual feature for the larger workgroup and means that you are not always refilling the printer with paper each time you want to print.
The toner cartridge will give you a reasonable life, but is quite expensive to replace. So if you print thousands of pages a month, you might wish...
