"All My Gear is on This Camping Table"

Hi-Gear Elite Double Table

Hi-Gear Elite Double Table

Camping nowadays is not quite the 'back to nature' experience that it once was. There is a massive amount of equipment and items specifically designed for camping to make the whole experience of sleeping in the great outdoors much more like sleeping indoors! It is possible to purchase everything from portable toilets, wardrobes and camping fridges right down to the more traditional gas camping stove. I must admit that I was a reluctant camper to begin with, which led to considerable expenditure on items to make the whole camping experience more comfortable and enjoyable. One such purchase was this Hi-Gear Elite double table.

The Product

This is a large table specifically designed for camping. Unusually, the table does not simply fold up like traditional style camping tables. This Hi-Gear model features an exterior frame which folds up in an umbrella style along with the legs. The main 'table' section comes in two halves which click into place and are comprised of a series of plastic slats which fold into each other. This clever system results in much more compact item when folded up and comes supplied with a strong canvas bag which keeps all of the components together securely in a very compact package. The filled bag is slim enough to fit easily in a car boot and can be squeezed down in the foot well of the rear passenger seats if space is at a premium.
Ease of Assembly

After purchasing this table we were surprised that it wasn't supplied with assembly instructions as it isn't immediately obvious how all of the pieces fit together. Luckily we had seen the table on display in Go Outdoors before purchasing and had already had a go at taking this apart and reassembling it and so we had an idea of how it worked. When we tried to set this up for real on our first camping trip I did struggles slightly to get the table slats to fit securely in position but did realise eventually that there are small rubber stoppers that the table tops need to slot into to hold the surface of the table in a stable position. After a few attempts at assembly this has become much easier and dismantling and folding the table is very straightforward.

We had purchased this table with the intention of sitting around it to eat our meals from it. We did do that a couple of times but quickly realised that the height of the table didn't match up very well with the height of the camping chairs. It wasn't a particularly practical dining option, especially for the kids, as the height of the table can't be adjusted to match the chairs. One of the legs can be adjusted slightly to allow for this to be stabilized on irregular surfaces as most camping pitches are but that doesn't really affect the height of the table. I think that anybody wanting a camping table specifically for sitting down and eating at would be better off purchasing a table that has benches attached although they have the disadvantage of taking up much more room both in use and during transport and storage.

Where this table really did prove to be invaluable during our camping trip was as a general storage area and multipurpose preparation area. That might sound quite grand but essentially this became a much needed safe dumping ground for all our stuff, being the only flat service available inside the tent. With one small area acting as kitchen, living area and pretty much everything else for five individuals, there is a lot of stuff to store and organise.

This table has continued to prove its worth and usefulness long after our camping trips have finished. Due to its compact size we've been able to keep this in storage in an upstairs cupboard, rather than needing to shove this away in the loft or shed. The bagged up table is lightweight enough to carry up and down stairs without issue. This easy access means that we use this handy table every time we have a barbecue at home.
Price and Availability

We purchased this table from a branch of Go Outdoors and this table is still available from their website for £49.99. This might seem expensive for a camping table but it has proven to be both versatile and robust as well as being compact for storage and transport.

Overall Recommendation

A portable table is a pretty essential item for camping as a large family, although singles or those camping as a couple could easily manage without one. For a family, this table is a great size when put together and offers an invaluable level surface for storage or food preparation but the clever construction system means this takes up much less room when folded than other styles of camping table.

(The second photo offers a clearer view of the assembled table. The first picture demonstrates just how much stuff we managed to fit on it when camping!)
