Hidden & Dangerous 2 (HD2) puts you in command of a squad of elite SAS troops during WWII. Released back in 1999, the original Hidden & Dangerous showed lots of promise, but was ultimately let down by a convoluted interface and a mass of show-stopping bugs. For HD2, the development team has given the game engine an extreme makeover.
HD2's 20 or so single-player missions transport you to a variety of far-flung locales, including Asia, Europe and the Arctic. As in the first game, HD2 gives you a fascinating historical insight into the tactics, equipment and weaponry of the era. This emphasis on realism permeates every facet of gameplay and mission goals almost always hang on a knife edge, with little or no margin for error. While this uncompromising approach can be a bit frustrating at times, it makes the successful completion of a mission all the more satisfying.
You begin each mission by selecting a squad of men (up to a maximum of four) and kitting them out with equipment. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can have the computer autoselect men and equipment for you. Each soldier has his own inherent strengths (endurance, shooting, stealth) and weaknesses; ultimately, it's up to you to create the best mix of skills for any given mission. In HD2, these skills can be increased through experience and this simplistic role-playing element adds a new dimension to the game.
Without a doubt, the best facet of HD2 is the dynamic squad management system. This system is split into a number of different groups, which include movement, attack, action and formation. Once a particular group has been selected, you can use a numbered menu to issue a staggering variety of commands to individual units or the squad as a whole. When you're in close proximity to the enemy, you can even revert to hand signals to silently communicate orders to your men. While the squad management system is extremely sophisticated, it's surprisingly simple to use.
HD2 also features a great tactical mode, which automatically pauses the game while you set waypoints and queue orders for individual squad members. It's hard to express the sense of satisfaction you get from sitting back and watching your squad successfully execute a complex sequence of commands.
If squad-based warfare isn't your cup of tea, there's a new Lone Wolf option that allows you to go it alone. The single-player campaign also includes a new Carnage mode where you are required to kill every enemy soldier you encounter.
From a visual perspective, HD2 looks great: textures and character models are all highly detailed and razor sharp. The development team has also gone to great lengths to accurately model objects, uniforms and weaponry, resulting in a game that oozes historical authenticity.
HD2 features a beefed-up multiplayer component, which includes Deathmatch, Occupation (very similar to Capture the Flag) and Objectives (where Allied and Axis teams complete specified objectives to win).
With Hidden & Dangerous 2, the development team has addressed the flaws of the original game, while capitalising on its strengths. The end result is a challenging and thoroughly involving tactical combat offering.
Advantages: Good Graphics, Great Gameplay Disadvantages: Quite Linear
...few years since the first Hidden and Dangerous game came onto the scene, this first installment was received with mixed opinions. Whilst it was revolutionary in the size and scope of the missions and the scale of the maps it had its flaws. The major flaw being of course the huge number of bugs present in the game. I am happy to report that no such problem exists in this – the second installment of Hidden and Dangerous.
Hidden and Dangerous 2 sees ... ...missions against the Nazi's and their allies during WWII.
This is quite a big game – I have yet to complete it (though I think I am close to the end now). It has a wide variety of missions taking place in a wide variety of locations across the globe. It should keep the average gamer interested for a good few weeks.
The game starts in the snowy wastelands of Norway and progresses through Icebergs, Africa, Malaysia, Germany, France and many other ...

Despite this being listed in the strategy section of the forum, it's largely an action game. You have various troop classes such as grunt, spy, sniper, medic etc. There is also a slight RPG feel to the game as there are roughly seven stats however when it comes to weapons unlike other games which may differ between light and heavy weapons this doesn't. This means that when your shooting stat increases this aids your proficiency with all weapons which ... ...were split.
Party AI is certainly more than adequate, you won't find them wandering about if you walk away too quickly etc. However annoyingly you cannot shoot when doing actions such as climbing a ladder, although you'll be able to see if an enemy is stood at the top of the walkway this really doesn't help you avoid being shot.
The graphics aren't anything to write home about, the stats make the game rather easy and aren't well balanced and the ...

Manufacturer's product description
A tense, varied and precise tactical shooter, Hidden & Dangerous 2 plants you in the midst of World War II, sending you behind enemy lines and giving you some tricky challenges to overcome. Happily, it gives you some significant tools: there's the squad of soldiers you must hand pick, for instance, taking into account qualities such as stealth, shooting and lock picking. Then there's the arsenal of weaponry, ranging from quiet and effective daggers through to a loud and brash bazooka. And on top of that there are factors such as your compass, the odd disguise and items such as wirecutters. It's a lot to wrap your head round at first, although a solid training level helps you negotiate the learning curve. Once you're into the game, things become very tense, very involving and very good fun. You command a team of soldiers, and it's credit to the developers that their AI is of a standard to genuinely make you feel in charge. You also have a certain level of freedom in how you take on the varied, detailed missions you're presented with, often leaving you needing to decide whether to take out the enemy or attempt to crawl right past them.Hidden & Dangerous 2 is, ultimately, a genuinely challenging game with a long lifespan. It has the odd niggle here and there, but these are far outweighed by the superb blend of tactics, action and stealth that the game presents. It may take a little work to get into, but make the effort and you'll find this to be one of the best-value games you'll buy. It's compelling entertainment. --Simon Brew The explosion sends shivers up your spine as the deafening sound temporarily causes you to lose focus. Did they make it out? Countless thousands of lives depend upon your team, the Special Operations Executive, destroying this airfield. You've eliminated dozens of the enemy, outmaneuvered land mines, and covertly planted the detonators. But did they make it out? You regain your senses and stare into the raging flames. Dark silhouettes seemingly rise out of the ground... they're running! They're running at you! Hidden & Dangerous 2 is a first and third person tactical shooter that builds upon the tremendous success of Hidden & Dangerous. You lead a small squad of Allied soldiers deep behind enemy lines, to carry out secret missions during World War II. The gripping story line takes you to Europe, Africa, Burma, and other locations scattered across the globe. Each critical decision impacts you, your men, and your country. This unique blend of action, strategy, and tactics forces you to use your brain just as much as your trigger finger.
