We made our journey to Highbury knowing that there was an odds on chance we would lose, at Carrow Road we had witnessed an Arsenal master class as they beat us 4-1. The result at Highbury was just the same although we did get a good strike from Darren Huckerby. It's just a shame we allowed Mr Henry a lot of time and space!
I'd never been to Highbury before but I had seen it on Sky. As a stadium for soccer's elite it's not really up to the standards of Man Utd, even Stamford Bridge is a bit more impressive. But you get a feeling of history with the ground and you have bear in mind its location. Highbury for way supporters is quite secret. You could easily walk down the street in North London and miss it. The away supporters entrance is located behind some houses, as you go through it's like going into someone's back yard!
The facilities underneath the terracing are pretty standard. Room is tight so it can become a free for all when getting a beer, which is a bit overpriced at near to £3. But then that's London for you. Going out onto the terraces you find yourselves very close to the Arsenal fans. This is actually pretty good as it generates some good natured banter. Needless to say we took full advantage of the fact that we beat Bayern Munich on our European travels. Something Arsenal failed to do a week or so earlier. However we were under no illusions that a lot's changed since then and it was said with tongue firmly in cheek.
The view of the pitch isn't too bad, we were sat quite low down but still managed to get a good view of all the action, and you're also pretty close as well. Like Craven Cottage, Highbury is a pretty open ground which takes away some of the atmosphere. I was a bit disappointed with the noise generated from the Highbury faithful but then when you've seen team after team steamrollered you probably get a bit passé about the whole thing.
Access to the ground is quite painless. If you're driving then I didn't see a great deal of parking available. However there is a tube station nearby if you're going by rail. Coaches are parked nearby to the ground as well if you're using your club's own travel. Amazingly the highlight of the day wasn't actually the game. Instead it was seeing Ashburton Grove, Arsenal's new ground is close to completion and takes them into modern stadium territory. I have to say it looks very impressive and hopefully we'll be back there for it's opening season.
Ticket prices were £33, this wasn't bad considering Arsenal are one of the top teams in the Premier League and it was London. Compared to the £35 charged by Palace it was a bargain in comparison. I don't know what prices will be like for the new ground but hopefully the club will keep them sensible.
So on a warm Saturday afternoon some canaries were gunned down by the gunners. It wasn't so bad, no one died except for a little more hope!
Advantages: History Disadvantages: Showing its age.
...played at it's purest at Highbury as the new stadium will be open for business for the start of the 2006 season. Now you might think that as a life long fan who used to live in N5 I will be sad to see the team move to a new stadium where the name has already been sold to the highest bidder, Emirates, however you would be wrong. It is not that I don't love the old stadium even with all of it's faults, what is more important to me is that the team ... ...Arsenal have been at Highbury for 93 years and whilst the new ground is a mere 500 meters away the facilities will be very much further apart on the scale of comfort and quality.
Highbury is an old stadium and it shows. It is the old style with four stands and is effectively open at each of the corners. It is this old design and the fact that the stands only go up two levels that has helped in the preparation of the playing surface.
The North Bank ...

Advantages: Easy to get to, Small pitch, Close atmosphere Disadvantages: parking restrictions, fairly costly
Highbury - "The Home of Football" and that's what you get. The stadium, build in the early 1900s is located in Islington, approximately 8 minutes walk from Finsbury Park, or 25 seconds from Arsenal Tube, both on the Picadilly Line. Walk out of the station on a match day and the atmosphere already hits you, from the smell of the frying burgers to the shouts of "Get yer programme." Highbury boasts 4 stands, the North Bank, which was knocked down and ... ...3 club shops.
Also, Highbury was the first ground at which giant TV screens were erected and these show highlights and all sorts before and after the game.
there are facilities for the disabled, however, it is imperative to call a couple of weeks before the game to reserve one of the 100 spaces. ...

Advantages: Arsenal's home record is superb Disadvantages: Attendance is low
...faced with a real problem. Highbury is selling out week-in week-out and Arsenal can find now way of raising the ground's capacity. This led to the Gunners playing their Champions League home games at Wembley. What a mistake! The past couple of years in Europe Arsenal have had superb away form but have been unsuccessful when playing at Wembley. I'm not saying they're no good at Wembley, remember the FA Cup Final in '98? But playing at Wembley in the ... ...the chance to play at Highbury in Europe the last couple of seasons, so they missed out on that comfort. The main differences between Highbury and Wembley are that Highbury ha sfans very close to the pitch for a great atmosphere that Arsenal are used to, whereas Wembley posistions the fans quite a distance away from the touchline. The other main difference is that Highbury has an incredibly small pitch, the equal smallest in Britain with two other ...

...as much a part of Highbury as the floodlights: it's worth going to a game to hear her. There's always the top quality football as an excuse for going, of course.
Finally, Arsenal came back home for their European football - although it took them the closure of Wembley to persuade them - and proved to themselves it was one of football's greatest bloopers. The Champions' League final wouldn't have been such a distant dream for the Gunners if they'd ...

...so much more people than highbury and will be magnificant plus it is close to the stadium at the moment but it will not contain the history that Highbury does, such as when Ian Wright broke the record for the most goals scored in an Arsenal career. I've only been supporting the arsenal for about 9 or 10 years but I still know about the history and pride of highbury. I personnaly would like a higher capacity stadium and since we can't built on highbury, ...

Advantages: Close to the Underground, easy parking. Disadvantages: Over-zealous security, no disabled access upstairs.
The venue is owned by the Mean Fiddler group who own many venues across London. There are two parts of the Garage in Highbury, upstairs and downstairs.
Upstairs: Usually used as a club or for small gigs. The stairs leading to it are some of the most hazardous I've ever attempted when drunk. Thin concrete stairs at 2am are not friendly. The sound system sounded fairly awful, but it's more suited to a club with a lowish volume than the Industrial gig I witnessed. The size and shape of the room tends to distort the sound at high levels. The dressing room/chill out room is little more than a square, green room with two tables. There is no disable access to this level.
Downstairs: A middle-sized venue, that's well laid out with the stage visible from all locations. However, security can be a little over-zealous, hauling people out ...
i guess i can now start to marvel at this players abilities (but not his hair style) now that he has finally decided to see sense and get out of highbury! he is a quality midfielder although i think he will struggle to get a place regularly in the barcelona team. his work rate and distribution is excellent and he is not a bad finisher either. he does not have the best of names either, with many jokes being made about his first name and his second name translating as 'small'.name and hair asside, this player is an excellent one with lots of experience. ...
