I was strolling past a shop window the other day when I caught sight of some postcards for sale. You know they had the usual smutty ones that only British people find funny. Then they had the ones aimed at tourists, the ones that demented Tourists pick up when they travel back to the "old country" to send to their friends and family in the "new world". These postcards happened to feature some "typical" Scottish scenes. One of which was a herd of Highland Cows standing in a field. And I have to say that this is a very common sight in Glasgow, except in Glasgow the cows tend to wear Burberry, Argos jewellery and congregate round the tobacconist in Somerfield.

So as a Scottish Crisp manufacturer you can expect that Highlander would do a Roast Beef flavour crisp. And they do. You can get a hold of them in the savoury selection multi-packs for around £1.10 to £1.20 for eight bags of crisps (only two will be Roast Beef though).

The packet follows the usual Highlander crisp design with the upper half being blue and "Highlander" written in yellow letters and the lower half being plum coloured with "Roast Beef flavour" written in white letters. There is also a picture of a castle and some of the crisps themselves. The packet claims that they have a "unique crinkle crunch". We shall see about that.

As with all crisp packets the bag seems half-empty but presumably all that air acts as a sort of buffer preventing the crisps from breaking too much. The crisps are crinkle cut but the crinkles are not overly pronounced. The crisps have a good yellow colour and are dusted with brown flavouring. If you stick your nose in the bag you will get a salty, fried potato, beef stock smell. The crisps, however, do not smell greasy.

While these are not the best Beef crisps I have ever tasted they are a very passable attempt. The beef flavour is strong and mixes in nicely with the fried potato taste. They are quite salty. The beef taste is not hot in the way that some beef flavours can be. As I said earlier it tastes like beef stock.

Admittedly these would not be my favourite flavour of Highlander Crisps. Out of the flavours that I have tried Bacon &Brown Sauce has been my favourite. Despite this the Roast Beef flavour was very pleasant and filled my snacking desire for beef flavour crisps.

Each packet of crisps costs roughly 15p each from the multi-pack. I think that this provides excellent value for money when you compare it to the price of other crinkle-cut crisps such as McCoy's. Although the Highlander Crisps' texture is not as crisp nor are they as thickly cut as the McCoy's Crisps. They are not soggy but they do have a softer crunch.

So maybe if you are a tourist to Scotland you should buy one of the smutty cards to send home. Then you can buy some of these crisps and experience the taste of Scotland. There's no point in visiting if you aren't going to try the local cuisine, now is there?
