...his diet. His was given hills canine id by the vet immediately after the op as this would help settle his stomach, she advised that they would send the bladder stones to hills in America to test them and that would determine his future diet, I will come to that later. About the food

Hills advise feeding the food over 3-6 times during the day, this is not possible for me as I work but it is better for the dog as it helps them digest it better.
The good news is that jack is recovering well and starting to enjoy his food the bad news is that the report on his bladder stones as come back from hills and he now has to go on another type of canine prescription called canine c/d which is just as expensive ...

Advantages: Really noticeable results, my dogs love it Disadvantages: More expensive than standard dog food
...dry before we settled on Hills a couple of years ago. It was recommended by our vet, who we thought was just after a commission as he sells it! But we gave it a go and the results really were noticeable and we haven't looked back.
Hills philosophy is to make pet foods to "enrich and lengthen the special relationships between people and their pets". I love my dogs so am a complete sucker for anything that will make them live longer!
They make a ... ...we don't need those at present. We just use the regular 'science plan' version of the dry food, which provides balanced nutrition and seems to taste really good. (not that I've tried it personally!). I thought they would get bored by just a bowl of dried food every meal time, but no chance. They both dance around me as I'm measuring it out and can't wait to wolf it down.
The specific issues we had to tackle were:
Excess energy in our male dog - ...

Hills Canine Prescription R/D
We were prescribed this diet by our vet for our 4 year old Labrador, who to be honest has got quite porky recently. What does it do?
The R/D diet is designed to manage your dogs weight and can produce significant weight loss in dogs as it is low in calories. Weight gain in dogs is usually caused by an increase in body fat, which is usually caused by being greedy and eating too much food and also lack of exercise. The ... ...so your dog receives all the nutrients it needs to be healthy while losing weight. R/D is low in calories, but high in fibre which keeps your dog satisfied for longer while dieting.
The food is rich in 'L-carnitine' to help burn fat while increasing muscle during the diet. It also contains antioxidants to maintain a strong immune system.
It comes in 2kg, 5kg and 14kg bags.
Our Experience
Our dog is needing to lose 20.3% of his body mass, over ...

...diet. The vet suggested Hills WD prescription diet for dogs.
Within days our dog had improved. She was no longer incontinent and her condition generally was noticably better. Her coat is amazing, glossy and shiny and she is now a much happier dog.
Hills WD is available only on prescription from a vet, but if you have a dog like mine who has digestion troubles, don't despair. Tell your vet you have heard of WD for dogs and give it a try. WD is made ... ...she is ill again.
We have discovered our dog actually suffers with colitis, but if you have a dog which is run down, incontinent, or has loose stools, don't immediately presume the worse. Ask the vet for his/her opinion on Hills prescription diet and give it a try. ...

Cost of some of the Wafcol range for reference:

Salmon and Potato 7.5kg (online price): £22.99
Wafcol Senior 7.5kg (online price): £17.99
Wafcol Light 7.5kg (online price): £17.30
In comparison to (none of which are rice free and all are animal tested):
HillsCanine Adult 7.5kg (online price): £21.98
Eukanuba Adult 7.5kg (online price): £19.75
JWB L&R 7.5kg (online price): £20.43
Results so far:
Dharma's skin is clearing up and her coat is less greasy and smelly. Her "waste" (sorry folks!) is solid and there is less of it. She enjoys her food, and even her behaviour is better (something which can be affected by diet).
Conclusion:
Wafcol is expensive, yeah. It's not as cheap...

Advantages: High meat content, highley palatable. Disadvantages: A bit expensive
...it’s also good for cats who are refusing to chew food. It’s a bit expensive to feed on a daily basis ( RRP for a pack of 8 petit pates £3.19, RRP for a single serve pouch 39p) and your cats will need about 3 tins a day. I find it’s a great treat for the cats and breaks the monotony of dried foods.
Overall.
Unlike dried food it can be very difficult to find a tinned cat food that has good ingredients in it and not too much ‘filler’. This brand seems to fit the bill though. I don’t think I would be comfortable feeding my cat solely on this as I think the premium dried foods are probably better for them in the long run and also wet foods do not clean the cats teeth as dried foods do. I would recommed that if you use Hi-life that you supplement it with a dried food such as Iams, Eukanuba, Hills or Royal...

Advantages: Cost effective, good for your dog. Disadvantages: Availability
...Let me explain about Burns dog food. Its a dry biscuit type of food which is hollistic and made primarily of meat, in the case of the one we use chicken, nothing that wouldnt be fit for human consumption. And rice to bulk the food up and add fibre. Certain oils are added too. There are various types available such as chicken and rice, lamb and rice, a weight control variety and one for puppies and small breeds.
When we took our Labrador Harvey to dog training classes the trainer recomended Burns to us. Apparently feeding your dog the wrong diet can cause behavior problems, not that our dog really has any but he can be a little crazy due to being a young dog.
We were using Royal Canin, which in the North Of England is even harder to get hold of than Burns!! We tried Pedigree Chum, Hills Science Plan and others, we found...
