Hills Canine Prescription R/D

We were prescribed this diet by our vet for our 4 year old Labrador, who to be honest has got quite porky recently.

What does it do?
The R/D diet is designed to manage your dogs weight and can produce significant weight loss in dogs as it is low in calories.
Weight gain in dogs is usually caused by an increase in body fat, which is usually caused by being greedy and eating too much food and also lack of exercise.
The R/D prescription diet provides a complete diet with balanced nutrition so your dog receives all the nutrients it needs to be healthy while losing weight.
R/D is low in calories, but high in fibre which keeps your dog satisfied for longer while dieting.
The food is rich in 'L-carnitine' to help burn fat while increasing muscle during the diet. It also contains antioxidants to maintain a strong immune system.
It comes in 2kg, 5kg and 14kg bags.

Our Experience
Our dog is needing to lose 20.3% of his body mass, over 18 weeks, which totals him losing 433g per week. We were advised to feed him 385g/day of R/D spread over 2 meals. This amount is sufficient and seems to keep him satisfied. He also seems to beg for food less maybe due to the extra fibre provided by this diet.
The switch over to R/D for our dog has been simple as he seems to love the taste, which is uncommon for diet dog food. We didn't have any problems with him getting an upset stomach due to the change of food, which we were expecting even though we gradually introduced the food.
So far it seems to have been successful in only two weeks we have noticed a significant amount of weight loss.
This diet needs to be combined with high amounts of exercise, just like all diets, to achieve the significant weightloss.
The main disadvantage of this food is the price! It is much much more expensive than any ordinary food, but it does provide proven weight loss and is worth the money in the long run.
The amount we were feeding our dog meant the small size bags were not going to be very economical and wouldn't last long at all.

- A 2kg bag of R/D costs £11.29 and would last for 5 days, costing £2.25 a day, and £15.80 a week.

- A 5kg bag costs £21.69 and would last for 12 days, costing £1.80 a day, and £12.65 a week.

- A 14kg bag costs £51.49 and would last for 36 days, costing £1.43 a day and £10.01 a week.

We went for the 14kg bag which is much more economical, but very expensive still.

Overall I would definitely recommend this food as it is very effective for proven weight loss, but if you are on a budget it could put a severe hole in your pocket!
