I even thought of putting them down or giving them to a rescue home.

To begin I will give you a bit of history. I have two Persians now 9 years old. They started life out on Go-cat with no problems whatsoever. I would like to state here that my friend has two Persians who are 14 now and they have never eaten anything other than Go-cat or had anything wrong with them.
The trouble started two years ago when at their annual review it was decided their teeth weren't up to much. The smallest one was born without many teeth so was a little deformed, she had to have two more removed. However, the big Persian didn't actually have any teeth out, she had a scale and polish at the princely price of £280!!! I was horrified. The vet told me to go onto Hills tooth kind "Oral"
They loved this, well they would at £16 a bag, they ate as much as the put back in the litter tray.
After a while my large Persian stayed in a cattery, I did warn them that she wasn't very good at cleaning her bottom and since Hills the consistency had become a lot stickier. She came out distraught, wouldn't stop cleaning her bottom until she had no fur on her tail. More trips to the vets more Hills food to try, Hills z/d, Hills i/d, steriods, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood test, stool samples...... £2,000 later and still being told to persevere with Hills. I finally flipped when I realised that the little one had also developed an upset stomach. The general mess and stench around the house was indescribable! I even thought of putting them down or giving them to a rescue home.
But the vets said there is no other food that they can digest as well as Hill i/d and that they both must have inflammatory bowl disease and needed bi-ops. I threw the bag of Hills back at the vets and demanded a refund (£28) which of course took me about 3 phone calls to collect.
In the meantime I did some heavy research over the net and found that Hills, particularly in America had caused this kind of problem in quite a few cats and in fact some of Hills products, vets had discontinued. I also discovered that if a vet promotes Hills, Hills in return heavily sponsor the vet.
My neighbour has two cats with the same vets and they too were first put on Hills Oral and now because of the state of their insides Hills z/d. She has now spent £4,000 on them and we have more or less fallen out over this, but she believes the vet and has the money to spend - which I don't.
I will now finish my review; I tried going back to Go Cat but nothing improved so I took to feeding the cats fish and chicken and they were fine on this but I realised they would not be getting enough protein and vitamins from it. I thought of going the natural food route but it was all too complicated, I work full time and have a dog too.
Word and mouth, reviews in the papers and recommendations by Crufts had been rating a product called Purina Pro Plan Food for both dogs and cats. I went onto their site and saw that they had just brought out a dried brand for delicate stomachs. It is called Purina Pro Plan Delicate and can be brought either over the net or like I did, ordered from your local pet store. A 3kg bag costs about £11.50 and lasts my two cats over a month.
This food saved my cats lives, whereas Hills had nearly ruined it. I really do wish vets would have a more open view on things -but then this proves a point, it is the money that most of them are interested in and Hills have cornered the market.
Advantages: Excellent quality, variety Disadvantages: Expensive, some varieties are smelly!
We've fed our three cats Hills Science Diet (adult "light chicken" variety) for as long as I can remember.
It feels very expensive (£11-£12 for the 2 kg) but they say when you break down the cost, it's actually not that bad. You can get a better deal if you can afford to buy the largest bags in one go and if you can manage to carry it to the car! :-)
But the real reason I'm writing this review is because of a specialty "prescription diet" dry cat ... ...pleased to find out that Hills promises to refund your money if your cat refuses to eat it.
Thankfully Charlotte loved the food from the start, as did our other two unfortunately - down to the tempting high protein aroma! So really, the only downside then:
* smelly because of the ingredients * Our other two cats love it too (but don't worry, the vet said it was fine for them to eat it as well!) As it's impossible to feed three cats separately, ...

Advantages: approved by vets, not a bad smell, cats like it, easy to serve, small pellets for tiny mouths Disadvantages: very expensive!!
Hi! My name is Shady - yes, my stupid mother is an Eminem fan! She writes under the name of Karen(UK) here at Ciao and while she's just nipped out, I thought I'd write an opinion myself. After all, it's not often us cats get a chance to have our say.
I have only been living in my new home a few days, but before that I lived with an elderly couple and they had me from being a kitten. I am now three and a half and have always been fed this delicious ... ...Plan - Veterinary Formulated is rather a mouthful for a puss like me - and it contains the dreaded 'V' word too, ugh!
Anyway, it comes in small brown coloured dry pellets, so it is tiny enough to fit in my delicate mouth and easily crunched. It tastes and smells so much better than that awful tinned stuff, with or without gravy or jelly. Just remember to leave out a constant supply of water (or cat milk), as it can make us poor pussies thirsty.

Advantages: It seems to last longer, it is cheaper in the long run and there is no mess or waste Disadvantages: Can have side effects for some cats, cause overweight and kidney problems, expensive
...I wrote this article/review about Hills food as it was highly recommended by our vet. The fact that he insisted on how good this kind of dried food was and also due to the fact that it seemed to save us money I was convinced that it was the best solution for our cats feeding problems….
But since then we’ve lost one of our cats due to ‘sudden kidney problems’ which the vet could not explain as it had checked him OK only a couple weeks ago, our other ... ...there was no connection between Hills biscuits and my cat’s kidney problems. As long as they were drinking enough water there was nothing to worry about…
But I had my doubts for this kind of dried food so I’ve decided to ignore him and go back to the old days of feeding them normal biscuits and Felix individuals pouches…
It’s being a few months now and both cats are back to their normal selves, energetic, chasing each other, breaking things, climbing ...

Advantages: Recommended by Vets/Breeders. Great nutritional value Disadvantages: Not available from Supermarkets e.g. Tesco, Sainsbury
Our kitten is now 12 months old and we were recommended this by the cat breeder and our vet! We are now putting him on the Adult version...
Advantages
- Great for nutrition/source of vitamins/minerals/fibre
- Cats love it!
- No artifical flavours or colourants added
- Antitoxidant vitamins to promote healthy digestive system (this certainly is the case - regular poos/right consistency/some smelly!!!!!) :-) - You don't need to use wet food (however, ... ...give it a more juicier type feed)
- If you don't use wet food it's great in hotter weather (no chance of it being attacked by flies or going off!)
- Works out less expensive (£12.50 - £13 for a 2kg pack which has lasted 6 weeks! You can get the bigger bags but this takes up space in your storage area and it's harder to carry! - Great for the teeth (although my cat is only 12 months old), I was advised by the breeder that cats who feed on wet food ...

Advantages: complete food, seems well balanced, easy to store and serve Disadvantages: Can be addictive, causing cats who snack to gain weight, High initial outlay.
...first started feeding my cats Hills Science Plan Feline Maintenence when there was on offer in Petsmart for a free bag in exchange for empty tins of cat food. This was a very good offer, but now one of my cats will eat basically nothing but Hills.
While it seems like a lot to shell out - £11 for a 2Kg sack, if you follow the recommended feeding plan, the daily cost is less than feeding tinned food.
The food will keep for a while once opened as ... ...recommended she go on to Hills Prescription R/D food (R/D - Reducing Diet) She still likes the biscuits, but eats less of them and she does seem to be slimming down a little. R/D is a higher fibre, lower calorie food with L Carnitine added to help breakdown existing fat stores (Squeaky has plenty of these) She still tucks into them well, but they seem to fill her up more than the regular or light feline maintenance.
At the end of the bag she will ...

Advantages: cat loves it, cheap, smells inoffensive too Disadvantages: none that I have found so far
Hi my fellow writing cats... It's Shady here again! Thought I'd just pop back on the computer, while Mum (Karen-UK) is off drinking her cup of tea.
You may have read my opinion on Hill's Feline Science Plan. Well, since then, my Mum discovered it was only available in huge bags for £9.99 and apparently, that's equivalent to rather a lot of reads at Ciao, so we have changed to something else that is available at a magical food store called "Asda".
The other morning, I was minding my own business, fast asleep under something known as "the girls' bunk beds" and all snuggled up next to a soft toy, very cosy. Then the door slams and Mum yells "Shayyyy-deee!" in that ear-piercing way. Well, I nearly jumped out of my fur, but she followed it up with some intriguing shaking of boxes, so I decided it might be worth a peek after all ...
