We've fed our three cats Hills Science Diet (adult "light chicken" variety) for as long as I can remember.
It feels very expensive (£11-£12 for the 2 kg) but they say when you break down the cost, it's actually not that bad. You can get a better deal if you can afford to buy the largest bags in one go and if you can manage to carry it to the car! :-)
But the real reason I'm writing this review is because of a specialty "prescription diet" dry cat food they do called Feline L/D. One of my cats was diagnosed with liver problems just before christmas. A biopsy revealed one of her kidneys was completely gone, and that her liver wasn't functioning properly. This had caused her to lose loads of weight as well as seeming very grouchy and unhappy from day to day.
Along with a steroid and syrup medication routine, the vets suggested we feed her the "Feline L/D" prescription diet Hills, which is high in protein and is supposed to be much easier to digest. It costs more than the standard varieties (about £13.50 for the 2 kg bag, the only size available) and we have to special order it. We were also concerned that our cat would reject it, as she is a fussy eater, but we were pleased to find out that Hills promises to refund your money if your cat refuses to eat it.Thankfully Charlotte loved the food from the start, as did our other two unfortunately - down to the tempting high protein aroma! So really, the only downside then:
smelly because of the ingredients
Our other two cats love it too (but don't worry, the vet said it was fine for them to eat it as well!)
As it's impossible to feed three cats separately, we just have to live with it and shoo them away if we happen catch them.I'm happy to report that she has put on several pounds, has lots of energy and an excellent appetite. You wouldn't even know she was ill! She'll need to keep eating this food for life as well as taking the medication, but there is no doubt in my mind that the Hills food complemented by the steroids has saved Charlotte's life.
