Another step into the unknown, another step towards healthy eating. The Hinari two
tier steamer. Yes it does improve the taste of food and no it does not fill your kitchen
with steam.
The Hinari electric steamer consists of a base unit with a 900cc capacity, (that is one
and a half pints), a steamer bowl, and, divided by a seating rim, a second steamer bowl.
In addition there is also a rice bowl which is made to sit inside either bowl and is used
for, you guessed, it rice. In fact this bowl is meant to be used for any small foods such
as rice and sweetcorn and also any foods being cooked in there own sauce. The whole
thing stands 330mm high and the diameter is around 230mm. The timer goes up to 20
minutes in single increments and continues up to 1 hour in 5 minute increments. When
the selected time is expired it attracts your attention by sounding a beep. It cost me
£24.49p. It is attractive looking and the dimensions make it practical to be left on the
worktop.
When reading the accompanying booklet I was surprised to find that there is very little
that cannot be steamed. The booklet contains full instructions and lots of cooking time
examples based on weight of food being cooked. For example:: 1 pound of cod fillets
takes 12/14 minutes. 1 pond (or even pound) of whole mushrooms takes 10/12
minutes. 1 pound of sliced carrots takes 19/22 minutes. I have used those has
examples because I have already tried them. On my first attempt I placed the fish in the
bottom bowl and the mushrooms in the top and set the timer for 15 min. Both were
well cooked and both tasted wonderful. I tried out the carrots using just the lower
bowl and set the timer just under the 25 minute mark. The results were perfect. Since
then I have progressed to the stage were I can discard the instructions and, up to now,
I have not had any failures.
Looking through the cooking times they all seem favourable with either the oven or
the oven top except potatoes and artichokes. I don`t bother with the latter and won`t
bother with the former. In other words I don`t eat artichokes and will carry on cooking
my spuds in the usual way. In addition to the instructions and example cooking times
the booklet also features a dozen recipes some of which I will be trying in the near
future.
Very pleased that I bought it but would be interested to learn why the measurement
given for water capacity is stated in metric (900cc) and all the food weights are given
in
imperial. I suppose they must have a reason and I will be asking them.
