Although it's relatively easy (albeit fairly time consuming) to home-cook lunches and dinners for your baby, breakfast is harder to do if your baby is not yet able to cope with the small lumps found in adult cereals. This is where Hipp Organic breakfast cereals come into their own as they are very smooth in texture and are therefore easy for a young baby to swallow.

~~~ Ingredients and Instructions ~~~
Fairly simple actually. This banana porridge is made from:
70% organic wholegrain oat flour
30% organic banana flakes
And it contains Thiamin (Vitamin B1).
It does not contain any added sugar which makes it a healthy breakfast option. It does contain gluten though which means that it is only suitable from 6 months onwards.
To make the porridge you have to warm your baby's usual milk and mix it with the dried porridge. Don't do what I did and heat the whole lot together because then it turns into a big stodgy lump which your baby will have difficulty in eating. The other thing I would advise is that you don't stir it any more than you have to because for some reason this also makes it go thick and stodgy.
The instructions on the box suggest that you mix 3 level tablespoons of porridge with 6 tablespoons of milk. This should obviously be increased as your baby's appetite increases. I found that my six month old could easily manage this amount but then he has always had a big appetite.
~~~ Taste and Appearance ~~~

When the porridge has been mixed with milk, it looks very much like a grey wallpaper paste so does not look very appetising although this probably won't bother your baby. This surprised me as I had incorrectly assumed that because it contained banana it would be yellow.

I can't comment on the taste of this because I cannot stand banana. However the porridge did smell very banana-y. My son certainly seemed to think it was yummy as he devoured what I gave him very quickly.

~~~ Pricing and Availability ~~~
Now, here we come to the downside with this product. It is very expensive when compared to grown up breakfast cereals.
The price for a 160g box of Hipp Organic Banana Porridge is £2.19. I have found that the price does not vary greatly whether you buy this from Boots, Tesco, Waitrose or any other supermarket and I have never seen this on special offer although if you are lucky you may find a money-off coupon inside the box.
If you follow the instructions on the box and make this with 3 tablespoons of porridge, you will get approximately 13 servings from one box of this cereal. However if your baby has a larger appetite then one box won't last very long at all.
~~~ Overall Opinion ~~~

Although it is expensive, this porridge makes an excellent breakfast for young babies. However, now that my son is older and is able to cope with lumpier food I have stopped using baby cereals and have started giving him grown-up porridge or Weetabix for breakfast instead as it is far far cheaper.

My son never liked the banana flavoured porridge, but he loves bananas though. Great review :)

Hipp are Organic (which often raises the price tag!) . . . One thing I did when my children were young was to make my own baked granola (from mixed grain rolled flakes . . . ie museli base), bananas, honey etcetera; then grind it finer to make my own healthy-eating easily digested and swallowed breakfast with complementary protein. Or just grind instant oats (100% oats) finer and use mixed with boiled water . . . ♥ jes ♥
