The Hippy Chick Hip Seat is an innovative product. It puts minimal strain on your back, feels very secure when put on (does a good job of keeping your tummy flat !) and it is very easy to swing junior onto it in a hurry.
It is basically a 'Bum Bag' with a sturdy styrene inner. The inner is removable, for washing the outer. The whole unit is very light.
I got my Hip seat when my son was about 9 months old. I used it alot, but now I think of it, only for a short period of time.
I couldn't find a front sling that suited my back, and the back carrier was unwieldy and much more effort to use. It was fantastic for that period of time when my son could sit, but was not particularly strong yet. The mental and physical effort that I would have used in keeping him on my hip, I was able to use in supporting his body and back. By the time he was able to walk, which was about 16 months, he was well and truly sturdy enough for me to put on my own hip reliably without being unstable. Since then, I have used it from time to time when my back has given up.
On the down side, you do have to conciously remember that you are using it. It feels so secure that on a couple of occasions, for a fleeting second I forgot to hold onto my son, which could have led to him falling off.
Now I have a second child, writing this review has reminded me about it. I must get it out - There are certainly times when it would be very useful for either my 9 month old or my 2 years 9 months old, particularly when I am coping with the two of them and can't take a buggy.
