My 11 month old daughter had an operation on her hips and needed to be in plaster for 6 months. She was very heavy and awkward to carry as her legs were bent in the plaster. Even just to walk from the carpark to the supermarket was uncomfortable on our backs. You just can't take a buggy everywhere!
As a moving and handling trainer I have plenty of experience in even weight distribution and posture to prevent back problems, so knew that carrying her for even short walks would potentially be a problem for our backs.
I came accross the hip seat on the STEPS organisation website where other parents of disabled young children had recommended this item. It was something I had to buy as I knew it could make such a difference to our lives at the time.
I was very impressed, it worked a dream for me. It was very comfortable to wear, the pressure was taken off my back and evenly distributed. I even had an arm free!! All she needed was an arm round her back for support!
The hip seat has same concept as a bum bag where it clips round the waist. The seat needs to be on the left side of your waist. The child can sit on the seat and cuddle up to you. There is a small concealed zipped compartment at the back to put a few valuables in. It comes in many different colours. It's just the same size as a large bum bag, so very easy to transport, can even fit in a baby changing bag. It can be uncomfortable if positioned incorrectly, it does take a while to find the comfiest position for you.
