It's the last and personally the best in 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by 'Phillip Pullman' and it is amazing. It's the most controversial, breathtaking, mind suspending novel I have ever read in my whole life.

It all starts with a girl named Lyra being kidnapped by her evil mother Mrs Coulter. She takes Lyra away to a mountain cave and holds her captive there in a deep sleep.

Meanwhile, Lyra's lifelong friend and soul mate, Will, meets his father who he has not seen for many years. Just as this precious meeting has come to being, disaster, his father gets killed by a heartbroken and deceitful witch. Now Will's mission is to free Lyra from the mountain cave with the trusty help of two angels, Baruch and Balthamos. Also he has the aid of the subtle knife. With this knife he can cut through anything, even into different worlds.

Through trials and tribulations he manages to do it but not at the expense of one of the angels and the knife. The knife is broken! With the aid of the great bear king Iorek Byrinsson they fix it but it is not the same.

Their next task is to go to the world of the dead and set them all free. In doing so they have to leave their souls behind. A heartbreaking task when it is part of you.

Will manages to cut a hole out of the world of the dead so all the ghosts can become part of the trees, grass, water and everything.

One last task was to be completed, the assassination of the Lord, Lord Metatron who had taken God's place in heaven. They enlisted the help of Lord Asriel, Lyra’s dad, to help them do this. The battle went on for days and there was death, murder and falling of angels but they managed to win and succeed. All they had to do was finally over!

Then they realized they were in love. After all this time they had been together they had only just realized it now. They could not be together as they were from different worlds. It was impossible. The knife had to be destroyed as every time it cut into another world it created a spectre that ripped the souls out of people. There was no way.

So they parted, but they would never forget the time they had together and emotions they felt for each other. Alone they had to build the republic of heaven. All alone!

I advise this book to 11+. It is very detailed and descriptive. With 548 pages there’s a lot to get through. All in all it’s the best book I’ve read this year. Anyone who wants to get stuck in, excitement and most of all a good story I recommend this book.
