This time I turn my attention to Pullman. I read his first and second books, and enjoyed them. The first book if you noticed began rather slowly however, the pace quickened after the plot was laid out.

This time the book jumps straight into the action, picking up where we left off.I assume you know what happened, and I'm not going to start ranting on about it, it would take too long.

Will is now seperated from Lyra, who is in the possesion of the evil Mrs Coulter, one of my personal favourites. Mrs Coulter appears however to have turned into a caring mother and is looking after Lyra by keeping her in a nice drug induced sleep.

Will is determined to rescue Lyra. However two angles of Asriel's have turned up to escort Will to him. Will says no, and tells them he will only go if they help him find Lyra.

Lyra is having troubling dreams about the land of the dead, where she keeps speaking to Roger (boy Asriel killed). These dreams are getting disturbing. Eventually Will saves Lyra with the help of Asriel's army.

Meanwhile, Mary has found a strange land full of elephants on wheels, and this leads later to an interesting discovery.

Later on, Lyra must make a very very painful decision, Asriel takes on God in the final wars and Will has to fix a broken subtle knife.

I am not going to give much more away, the book itself was very good. Pullmans style is a nice one, and I enjoyed it. A very philosophical part is played in this book. It gives a nice story to the whole rebellion against God by Satan, and angels and everything that is in the bible. Pullman is able to give a background to it. The characters are written very well, Lyra and Will are portrayed well, as they come of age. The whole fantastical element is done excellently.

I will quickly explain my rating system. I wouldn't read it again because, I feel it is a book I personally can read only once, if read properly, I saw no need to read it again. It's a compelling read, but it's not like Rowling is to a child. I couldn't think of any similar stories, that's why I like Pullman, because of his originallity. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I will not give this an excellent rating. There are only three books I know that desereve 5/5, books without faults.

P.S Thanks to all those who commented on my An Alive Cemetery, it's very much appreciated.
