I woz not bored reading this!
Review of I, Woz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon. Getting to the Core of Apple's Inventor - Steve Wozniak, Gina Smith by allangallop

Advantages: Great book, Very well structured and complete
Disadvantages: Annoying dust cover

Reading a Book is not usually my favorite pass time, but when I was brought the Steve Wozniaks biography 'I Woz' I could not put it down. On first impressions I thought the book would be all about how he invented the 'APPLE-1' noteably the first ever personal computer, but no. He covers every aspect of his life and his childhood, it is inspiring. The book goes into deep details without getting boring or repetitive which can make the reader feel ... Read review

In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, M. Wood
Review of In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great - Michael Wood by steerpyke

Advantages: great story telling, great pictures
Disadvantages: probably too light for the serious student

...is the everyman of history in the media; casual and charismatic, TV friendly and a fantastic story teller. The book is a companion to the TV series as is the usual format for Woods work. To travel the path taken by Alexander the Great is no small undertaking. The research alone to re-kindle footsteps taken over 2000 years ago is an admirable project, to actually re-travel the route is an amazing task which can not fail to make a great story. The ...
...look for evidence still visable in the modern landscape. From buildiings and physical geography to stories still told and the people themselves help bring the story to life and turn the dusty pages of history into a beautiful joining of past and present. The book takes you from northern Greece , through the majesty of the Persian Empire, into mystical Egypt, onto the roof of the world in the mountains of the Hindu Kush and eventually into the Indus ... 1000 years of immigration...
Review of In Search of the Dark Ages - Michael Wood by steerpyke

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...has become a big name in the world of TV in recent years, partly due to the new status afforded charismatic history presenters and also through writing such popular documentaries as In The Footsteps of Alexander the Great and Conquistadors. But alongside his high profile TV work, Wood has written a string of successful books aimed at both the leyman and student alike. In Search Of The Dark Ages spans a thousand year stretch of British history from ...
...takes each of these incursions in turn and examines the causes and effects of each. The period from the Roman period through the Dark Ages and ending with the Norman overlords, is one with very little writing by the indigenous population and thus a lot of source material is based on the perspective of those viewing the situation from afar. It is for this reason that the period is open to some of the most distorted interperations of history, but ... Read review

Bringing the Nazi top brass to justice
Review of Nuremberg: Evil on Trial - James Owen by larsbaby

Advantages: Excellent account of unprecidented war trial
Disadvantages: Can be hard reading at times

INTRODUCTION After the fall of the Third Reich, the Allies of the United Kingdom, France, The United States and Russia were left with the issue of bringing the Nazi leaders to justice. Whatever they decided would set a precedent; no trial in history had previously been conducted for the top brass of a criminal regime. They understood the importance of any decision they made, as it would hold the key to how war criminals once defeated would ...
...of this ground breaking trial. It is hard to read these kinds of things objectively; for example, my own father served in the British 8th Army during the war, and I would have been a fair way up the regime's hit list, so I can't claim to be in any way neutral. However, I have tried hard to read this book looking from both sides of the trial. It is a great credit to the book that it enables you to do this to a fair degree. Perhaps more fairly that ... Band of Brothers - truly inspiring.
Review of Band of Brothers - Stephen E. Ambrose by louie_gee_gee

Advantages: Compelling true story, well written.
Disadvantages: None

Highly detailed account of the wartime experiences of a group of soldiers from the 101st Airborne's Easy Company. The book's very accessible style (it even includes maps at the front) and its highly compelling subject matter combine to make this an extremely worthwhile read. The inclusion of photographs in the book helps to remind the reader that this is a TRUE story, rather than just a TV show (which was also excellent). Especially striking is the ...
...though I won't elaborate as it would spoil the book if you haven't read it (or seen the TV series). Personally, I couldn't put this book down. The shattering, heart-rending journey these men go through over the course of 307 pages makes this book (for me) the ultimate page-turner. It left me with a sense of gratitude at the sacrifices and hardships these men went through, whilst feeling inspired that they still retained their friendship and humanity. ... Read review
