The women that made the man

Advantages: Thorough, fascinating and an enjoyable read
Disadvantages: None for me

I've recently been reading the Shardlake novels by C.J. Sansom, set in Henry VIII's England. I've thoroughly enjoyed them, and found myself wanting to know more about this famous monarch and all his wives. You may be surprised when I say I knew nothing about him until I started reading those novels - except I could recognise his portrait and I knew he had six wives. At a push I might have managed to say that one was Anne Boleyn, but that was it. ...
...the time I was studying history at school, we learnt Scottish and British history - not English pre-union (although it was different when my mum was at school, as she seems to know everything about Scottish and English monarchy). I apologise for the lengthy and waffley introduction, but I wanted to make it clear that I really did approach The Six Wives of Henry VIII with no prior knowledge. I chose this book over the many that are available on this ...

More than meets the eye...

Advantages: Interesting, thought-provoking, readable
Disadvantages: Has various biases (most of them explained)

The British Isles are a unique geographical location in the world, having been provided by nature with advantages and problems unique in the world, and peopled by various groups who have worked together and against one another for domination of the Isles. Only for the briefest periods in history did the Isles truly represent a unified group, and even these times were more of an appearance of unity rather than actual unification. Norman Davies, author ...
...an interesting history of the British Isles, trying to portray them as a group that, while lacking unity, should be at least addressed as a unified group, always influencing and co-dependent upon each other. Davies is rather modest in his self-description of the book: ------------ This book necessarily presents a very personal view of history. Indeed, by some academic standards, it may well be judged thoroughly unsound. As I wrote in relation to ...

Murder Most Foul

Advantages: Intelligent, accessible writing, great storytelling.
Disadvantages: Hmmm @ Thomas More.

...a damp, dank room in the Tower of London? Or is he the most wrongly maligned figure in English history, blackguarded by the upstart Tudors so that the English people would accept them as rulers? Ask any historian and they will tell you that their job is - for the most part - detection. History is all about finding clues. History is about piecing together tiny shreds of evidence. In this way, the historian hopes to interpret the past. We all like ...
...of popular history than the most famous murder mystery of all; the story of the Princes in the Tower? This double murder has fascinated for over five hundred years. The disappearance – and we assume, death – of the erstwhile Prince of Wales and Duke of York has never, in the public imagination at least, been satisfactorily solved. Did the boys' uncle, Richard III really "do them in"? Or should we look elsewhere, to Henry VII perhaps, or perhaps even ...

An Amazing read

Advantages: Very detailed, interesting, true story
Disadvantages: For people it may be hard to understand some military terms

...a true story, this is the fantastic book on how Chris Ryan, Ex SAS Serviceman, carried out his escape from Iraq when their 8 man patrol became split up through enemy engagement and extremely harsh weather . A detailed account on the well known event, which is very populer throughout, this book follows every detail of the event which occured during this soldier's "superhuman" escape. The book overall is very interesting, and is definately hard to ...

If you want to understand modern Spain read this book

Advantages: Packed with the most up to date information
Disadvantages: Heavy going in places but worthwhile

...book on Spain published in the 90's. Since then a great deal of new information has come to light which has allowed him to add detail and clarify incidents which until recently were either hidden or lost in the archives. I have lived in Spain on and off for the past 20 years, and it has always been very difficult to get an objective view of the conflict. This is natural for any civil war but here in Spain the desire to forget if not forgive is embedded ...
