The price of plasma screens has decreased so much I couldn't pass up the chance to lay my greasy hands on the Hitachi 55PD9700 for £1300. A reduction from the £4000 asking price only 2 years ago and a reasonable price for a 55" HDTV. With a diagonal display of 1.4m, the viewable screen is 1.23m by 0.69m. Its huge and dominated my living room so much we decided to open it up by knocking through intot he dining room. The HDTV now sits in one corner and is the main feature of the room.
As soon as we managed to fit the HDTV into the corner of the room, build the stand and get everything attached (DVD player, PS3 and home computer to the HDMI port) we set about having our lives in front he television changed forever. Things with this HDTV will never be the same again.
The 55PD9700 supports 1024 grey levels which means that it can support 68.6 billion colours and wow, does it use it properly. I have never seen so many clear and deep colours with every shade I ever thought possible filtered onto the screen perfectly. On top of this the TV allows you to select which type of sound you would like in the same way a stereo allows you to choose the levels of bass. The four options are movie, music, speech or a user defined favourite. The 36w surround sound system that comes with the TV is better than my stereo system and so much clearer. Having the option to change the depth of sound to fit the film or TV show certainly adds to the whole experience.
To sum up, you won't find a bigger or better plasma HDTV for such a low price. It is huge, but there is no struggling to see the picture now and I have rediscovered my love for watching films at home. Its saving me a fortune on cinema tickets!
This is my parents' telly. It has proved great for having friends over to watch dvds. We don't actually have a dvd player so we connect up our laptops to the computer using the ports provided & our own leads for connecting a monitor to a computer & sound more
