The Hitachi 160GB (SATA Version) is truly an exceptional drive. Whereas Maxtor are known for their low prices and Western Digital for their performance, Hitachi have truly captured the market as a result of the reliability of their products. And so it is with the 160GB Hard Drive.

As far as hard drives go, it's pretty standard. It installs the same way, works the same way, even looks the same way, unless you count the different logo.

I personally have 2 of these drives, having bought them as a replacement for my previous Maxtor drives, after one o them failed irrecoverably and the other failed but did not have guarenteed reliability.

I have found that the Hitachi drive is slightly noisier than the Maxtor, although this is only really noticeable if you are lyying next to your case with it lying open, and even then only on bootup. The performance on the other hand is very good. There is no noticeable degradation of the drive, as found by using a disk analysis utility. Repeated or scheduled fragmentation also has no negligable effect. The drive is priced slightly higher than other major brands, with current prices around £60 exc. vat.

My opinion is that this is the perfect drive for anyone considering an upgrade, or for those like myself who are also computer builders. Clients can be guarenteed reliability.

Score: Full Marks!

Hitachi Deathstar!
Review of Hitachi DeskStar 7K250 160 GB by mbikerdav

Advantages: Raw speed and power
Disadvantages: none

Well i needed a new hard disk for my new pc, and i'd been told that SATA drives were the way to go... I decided on purchasing two of these drives to create a RAID 0 setup (2 hard disks working as one, twice as fast) after hearing nothing but good things, and i can back this up from experience. They're quiet, fast and reliable, and coupled with a relatively new system they make for a killer PC setup. One thing i must note is that if you are planning ...
...size should be fine. However if you are building a new pc i recommend you look to buy a drive twice as big as you think you need (or buy two of the same drive for a RAID 0 array), as many game installs are upwards of 5Gig each, which quickly adds up along with applications and media. I have been running this (well these) drives for a while now, as i never shut my PC down, and have found them to be extremely reliable, and have had no errors at all ... Read review

MASSIVE HARD DRIVE FOR CHEAP
Review of Hitachi DeskStar 7K250 160 GB by Jazzyg85

Advantages: Lots of storage space for Rock Bottom prices
Disadvantages: You have to get the pins correctly inserted with the cables as you can choose the size of the hard drive with this technique

This has got to be one of the best buys I have ever made for a hard drive. 160gb for that price is a like a bargain at a car boot sale. Not only does it have gigantic storage space, it is reliable because of the 8mb cache. Most hard drives that are cheap come with a 2mb cache whcih make them work slower. So if you buy this product, you know it will never fail on you. This makes it very reliable. Many hard drives are unreliable because of the size ... Read review

Good, Solid Drive
Review of Hitachi DeskStar T7K250 160 GB by  jajrst

Advantages: Fast, Sata, Quite Cheap, Reliable
Disadvantages: Have to use Hitachi Software to Enable Sata II

...you have to use Hitachi Feature Tools within windows, this is available from the Hitachi website and is easy enough but is just a added nuisance really. Once you have done this though the drive really flies along with speeds of about 130Mbps. The drive is also very unobtrusive sound wise, you can barely hear it clicking away in the background if you install it tightly. If your looking for something that's good for storing all of your files and fast enough to run games off that not going to break the bank this is really the drive to go for. If your looking for something that's just really for games have a look at the Western Digital Raptor X series with 10,000 Rpm and 74Gb of Storage but these retail at about £150 or so, I personally would go for the Hitachi over the Raptor because of it's superior reliability and more data storage...
