The Deskstar 180GXP provides the capacity and performance required to handle a wide range of advanced desktop and audio/video applications. Hitachi has standardized features in their desktop drives to supply lower acoustics, faster transfer rates and low-power utilization to make the Deskstar 180GXP drive ideal for non-PC, high-performance computing requirements. The superior areal density combines with the faster processor and streamlined cache buffer to enable award-winning performance for both the Deskstar hard drive and your system. Enhancements to the servo system and thermal monitor help to enable accurate data storage and retrieval. Combined together, these technologies enable popular capacity points and are designed to increase reliability. Fluid Dynamic Bearing motors provide improved acoustics over traditional ball bearing spindle motors. FDB motors will continue to be used more frequently in hard disk drive designs, particularly in applications requiring very high spindle speeds, high areal densities, and low acoustic noise. The Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP matches the drive capacity and performance guidelines for Microsoft Windows XP (40GB minimum and 7200rpm performance).

...IBM/Hitachi are very well known for their quality hard drives, well at least up until their 120GXP range which had abnormally high returns rates within a few short months of purchase but thankfully the problems they had with the 120GXP have been ironed out in their 180GXP range.
I have had my 120Gb180GXP for around 5 months now and the only problem I have had with it was last week when it suffered a bad sector that prevented me from booting but was sorted out no problems using Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test utility.
I have my hard drive split into 3x40Gb partitions (which I soon regretted due to the amount of data I have). With quick access rates it proves a great drive, especially with its 8Mb of cache and is also fairly quiet which is what most people need these days with them being left running for longer periods of time...

Advantages: Reliable, Quick, Quite, Good value for money Disadvantages: Not a very high capasity
...If you are looking for an 80 GB hard disk for your PC, you have found the one to buy! I have been using 2 of these HitachiDeskstar's in my PC for a long time now. I have had no problems with them. For the price you pay to buy one, you are getting cheap and reliable hard disk, witch has a good capacity to price ratio (around 2GB per pound).
I would recommend this hard disk to anyone whom it is making up a new computer, or just needs more storage space.
This hard disk is probable one of the quickest disks I have used, its read speed is good, but I must say, the SATA (serial ATA) version is about twice as quick, but for them that don't intend to go down the path of SATA Can just stick with the ATA-100 version (or IDE as it is more commonly known).
