...This LG GDR 8163B is the latest DVD-RW drive from LG and as per usual is Brillaint to use.
This is dual layer drive....8.5GB potential
Burns CDr's at 40x about 2 min 32 secs @600mb on an 80min/ 700meg cdr. Also does CDRW
DVD-r are a breese and the drive is very fast and quite.
DVD+r little slower but works fine with all mainstream disks.
DVD-Ram too but the disks a bit expensive so farfor me to try.
DVD-RW disks are a breese again using Nero newest version and back-up data is straight forward.
Have used Datawrite Grey 8x DVD-R and INFINITI 16x Green DVD-R no probs. But would suggest spending a little moer on good disks.
8XDVD-r time is about 7 mins for 4gb data and 7min 50 secs for DVD files.
Overall good machine and well worth the current cost of £35-£32....

...Excellent Hard Drive. I used to have a Maxtor 40Gb hard drive and after getting broadband I realised I needed much more capacity.
I decided to go for an Hitachi/IBM Drive because I work in IT industry and I am particularly involved in mainframes and I am aware that Hitachi are extremely rigorous when it comes to releasing new drives, for a new type of drive to be released by Hitachi it has to survive in a mainframe environment. Hitachi has an extremely good reliability rate at mainframe level. Hitachi have used the latest technology to ensure that their drives maintain good reliability like a Head Load/Unload system which means that the drive will not wear itself out when not in operation.
In comparison to other 7200rpm drives the Deskstar come out on top in terms of its seek time, which allows faster access to data. It also...

Advantages: High speed transfer, power consumption low, quiet Disadvantages: usual HDD shock issues
...The Hitachi TravelStar is the newly developed model from Hitachi Co. specifically designed for notebooks. It varies in storage capacity, but the important factors are: the rotation speed of 7200 RPM, S-ATA 1.5 GB/s interface, and what Hitachi says "a 22% performance increase".
Let's see what are the improvements:
-Having tested the model you get a random access time of 14ms which is extremely faster than it's predecessor and it's competitors;
-A Sequential Transfer rate of 71.5 MB/s (let me say wow-it's very fast)
-It's almost noiseless, you get a 42dB/A idle noise at 3mm distance from the HDD;
-and it's power consumption was reduced(in full load it uses 3W and in idle mode only 1.1W), which means it is very economical.
-the price is in reach;
I think this motivates you in at least trying one...
