Manufacturer's product description
Travelstar 5K320 is a 5400 RPM 2.5-inch hard drive with large capacities. The 160 GB per platter one- and two-disk models are designed for use in notebook PCs, set-top boxes, gaming consoles and other mobile applications. The 5K320 raises the standard for hard drive reliability with design enhancements that include altitude-sensing Thermal Fly-height Control (TFC), an improved actuator latch and fourth generation perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) head technology. Along with the attention to ruggedness, Hitachi continues to deliver excellent performance and low-power leadership. Designed to support the multi-tasking needs of consumers and commercial users balancing mobile computing and movies, music, photos and games on the go, Travelstar 5K320 delivers the right capacity and performance options to meet the needs of IT and consumer electronics manufacturers. Travelstar 5K320 features optional Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) with a SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface for hard-drive-level data security. The data is scrambled using a key as it is written to the disk then descrambled with the key as it is retrieved, giving users a higher level of data protection than traditional password-based security previously available. Another benefit is that it speeds and simplifies the drive re-deployment process. By deleting the encryption key, the data on the drive is rendered unreadable, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming data-overwrite. Hitachi provides enhanced-availability models that employ specific microcode to allow the Travelstar 5K320 to deliver 24 x 7 access to data. These models broaden the product line to make it more suitable for data-intensive applications requiring round-the-clock operation. The 5K320 provides high capacity, performance, durability and efficient power utilization on a proven platform for quality and reliability. EA models support the stringent demands of "always-on" applications in lower-transaction environments.
Advantages: Quite, low power consumption, high capacity Disadvantages: Expensive
...I have been using a HitachiTravelStar for a long time now, I have had not problems with it and I have given it a good run for the price I paid for it.
I originally started out with the 80gb model of this hard disk. I had absolutely no problems with it. (I now have the 100gb model as the laptop it was in was broken in a car accident).
I had the 80gb model for a year and never gave me any trouble. It was:
· Fast
· Reliable
· Quite
· Super low power consumption
· Had a quick spin up time
· Very quick seek time
· Standard 5 year warranty
· Very helpful warranty/customer support
Hitachi's customer warranty claims support is like no other that I have come across before. You go onto there website, fill out a warrant claim form; package the device (hard disk in my case) in the way they require. Once you have sent it to them...

Advantages: High speed transfer, power consumption low, quiet Disadvantages: usual HDD shock issues
...The HitachiTravelStar is the newly developed model from Hitachi Co. specifically designed for notebooks. It varies in storage capacity, but the important factors are: the rotation speed of 7200 RPM, S-ATA 1.5GB/s interface, and what Hitachi says "a 22% performance increase".
Let's see what are the improvements:
-Having tested the model you get a random access time of 14ms which is extremely faster than it's predecessor and it's competitors;
-A Sequential Transfer rate of 71.5 MB/s (let me say wow-it's very fast)
-It's almost noiseless, you get a 42dB/A idle noise at 3mm distance from the HDD;
-and it's power consumption was reduced(in full load it uses 3W and in idle mode only 1.1W), which means it is very economical.
-the price is in reach;
I think this motivates you in at least trying one...

Advantages: Loads in seconds, Durable, Power Utilized, about 30% extra boost, High Transfer Rate Disadvantages: N/A
...Do you know why I brought Travelstar 7K100? Do you know how much awards it got? 1. Editor's Choice Award, Micro Computer, China, August 2006 2.First Place in "Price-Performance", PC Welt, Germany, March 2006. There're another 2 awards. Feel how nice performance with this hard drive. It gives about 30% boost to your PC. It gives minimum 26 MB/sec transfer rate while a similar product gives 14.1 MB/sec transfer rate. It loads in seconds (approximately 0.30 minutes) and its buffer is 8 MB. Use HD Tune. You may find it!. It moves data faster without unconscious noises. It makes low heat than Fujetsu. 7200rpm is probably nicer with home PC. Hitachi Travelstar provided a remarkably, noticeably smoother experience. It's durable and power utilized....
