Manufacturer's product description
The Hitachi Travelstar 80GN is a 9.5mm high, 4200 rpm, 2.5-inch mobile hard disk drive. The Travelstar 80GN brings a 26th generation addition to the long line of Travelstar family drives. The innovative hard drive design combines AFC Media, Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor technology, Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) heads, Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) digital channel, head load/unload technology, Enhanced Adaptive Batter Life Extender (ABLE) 3.0, and an ATA/100 interface. With this design, the Travelstar 80GN provides exceptional quietness, storage capacity, performance, power management and quality required by today's demanding notebook systems. The Travelstar 80GN breaks current areal density records by allowing up to 70Gbits/ per square inch to be written on each disk. This was achieved by adding another coating of "Pixie Dust" - or an additional ruthenium/magnetic layer to create a five-layer sandwich called laminated-"Pixie Dust". These additional layers bring even higher thermal stability to the media, allowing data recording at ultra-high densities while maintaining data-integrity. As a result, the HitachiTravelstar drives are suitable for demanding, high capacity Internet, digital audio, video streaming, and real-time multimedia applications - whether users are in the office or on the road. The Hitachi Travelstar 80GN hard drive uses proven storage technologies such as TrueTrack Servo, Drive Fitness Test (DFT), Self-Monitoring Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.), as well as an adaptive control device that helps maintain high performance and fast seek times at high environmental temperatures. By using one of the Travelstar drives in a laptop system, you can unchain your multimedia studio from the desktop, enabling high-end multimedia creativity as mobile as your imagination.
Advantages: Quite, low power consumption, high capacity Disadvantages: Expensive
...I have been using a HitachiTravelStar for a long time now, I have had not problems with it and I have given it a good run for the price I paid for it.
I originally started out with the 80gb model of this hard disk. I had absolutely no problems with it. (I now have the 100gb model as the laptop it was in was broken in a car accident).
I had the 80gb model for a year and never gave me any trouble. It was:
· Fast
· Reliable
· Quite
· Super low power consumption
· Had a quick spin up time
· Very quick seek time
· Standard 5 year warranty
· Very helpful warranty/customer support
Hitachi's customer warranty claims support is like no other that I have come across before. You go onto there website, fill out a warrant claim form; package the device (hard disk in my case) in the way they require. Once you have sent it to them...

Advantages: Easy Install - a dummy cna do it, I did! Very fast and quiet in use. Disadvantages: None I can tell
...Being fairly hardware illerate, I put off replacing the HDD on my Dell Inspiron laptop as long as I could. Once it started to take 25 minutes to boot up and generated about 15 red alerts in the Windows XP event log, I thought "I am really going to have to go for it".
I had an IBM 60 GB HDD in place, which was noisy when spinning, set the fan off incessantly and was constantly giving me Blue Screen of Death (BSODs).
I started by internet researching and using the Dell forum to suss out the right disk to replace mine with. Taking a recommendation from a forum member, I looked first of all at the Travelstar 7K80 but decided to go for the newer version. I replaced a 60GB 5400rpm HDD with a 80GB 7200rpm HDD.
I spent a day copying filed to CD, all my docs, pictures, music, software downloads, license/registration numbers etc...

Advantages: Reliable, Quick, Quite, Good value for money Disadvantages: Not a very high capasity
...If you are looking for an 80GB hard disk for your PC, you have found the one to buy! I have been using 2 of these Hitachi Deskstar's in my PC for a long time now. I have had no problems with them. For the price you pay to buy one, you are getting cheap and reliable hard disk, witch has a good capacity to price ratio (around 2GB per pound).
I would recommend this hard disk to anyone whom it is making up a new computer, or just needs more storage space.
This hard disk is probable one of the quickest disks I have used, its read speed is good, but I must say, the SATA (serial ATA) version is about twice as quick, but for them that don't intend to go down the path of SATA Can just stick with the ATA-100 version (or IDE as it is more commonly known).
Instillation of this disk is like every other hard disk on this planet, if you know...
