Before I go any further, I must confess I think that Douglas Adams contribution to the writing world will be sorely missed.

I first came across Hitchhikers back when I was ten. Once a week in English we sat and listened to another episode of the radio plays.

Almost from the first few minutes I was hooked. The radio plays were superb but there is nothing better than using your own imagination with a Douglas Adams book.

Although the genre is humour or comedy, there runs a very serious undertone of right and wrong. The real wizardry of Douglas's writing, is the way he can take a situation of prime importance and condense it into a few lines in a paragraph. His knack of taking a situation and present the bare bones, as well as entertaining you at the same time, is true work of genius. Once you have had this message revealed to you, you never quite see the world the same again.

My advice to anyone unsure about reading Douglas Adams's work, is you will not be disappointed. The pace of the writing is quick and plain. Humour is used in so many different and unique ways, at times its hard to stop laughing. The array of differing characters floating in and out, but always blending perfectly into the story, is truly a joy to read. Very quickly you get to know and love the characters, and even the evil ones write poetry!

Get yourself a copy of the first three books, which are now published in one volume. I can assure you that you will be finished reading them in a couple of weeks at most, and you will be chomping at the bit for more.
