The original hitchhiker books were about the awfulness (and decency) of English life in the 70's and early 80,s. It was about Zen and about athism. Spotting these things flattered the reader and I have no doubt other readers saw other things within it too.
Hollywood understood the smugness of the book far too well- I was worried as soon as I heard Stephen Fry was involved. Unfortunately its genuine cleverness was unacceptable to Hollywood. All they understand is marketing. Athiesm must be out because many of the viewers will be Christian. Women generally choose the film on dates (men like to please) so a strong woman had to be found (Trillian) who must also be moraly superior to all the men.
This is simply the way Hollywood works. Certain groups must always be shown to be superior to certain other groups- the guidelines are as strict and unchangeing in this regard as Goballs guidelines on the treatment of Jews in German cinema during the war. The only real difference being that the Jews were not expected to pay the price of the tickets.
