It is impossible to offer an adequate parallel to Hitler's situation in 1936. With the peaceful resolution of the Rhineland crisis Hitler became both the adored object of the vast majority of Germans and an international symbol of modernity and dynamism. He managed this while in reality being the dictator of a system of single-minded viciousness new to human experience. In this book drawing on a vast range of material Ian Kershaw allows us to understand both the dictator himself and the society that made him. Perhaps this book's greatest achievement is to make clear the often conflicting dynamics that led from the seemingly stable successful Germany of 1937 to the brutalised military state of the 1940s. By concentrating on the figure of Hitler Kershaw both gives an immediate texture to these terrible events and shows the options available to Germany and its ruler at each point in the unfolding disaster. At the heart of the book lies Hitler's decision to unleash annihilatory war in the East and the terrifying new moral universe this brought into being: the degradation of enemies into beasts" and the hatching of the "Final Solution".This is the story of a poisoned world and of a man who was both shaped by that world and - to a catastrophic degree - created it."
Advantages: The authoritative work on Hitler. Disadvantages: A huge book which takes time to read - and this is only the first half.
...IanKershaw, the historian behind the BBC’s excellent series, ‘The Nazis: A Warning From History’, is also the author of what I feel is the definitive biography of Adolf Hitler. It is fascinating not just in terms of the details it unearths, but also from the point of view that Kershaw has taken a style of writing typically alien to him and made it his own.
Modern ‘revisionist’ historical perspectives view history through a wider angle than historians of old have taken. Where previous historians tended to focus on individual people at the centre of importance (e.g. Hitler, Stalin or Napoleon) more modern writings examine the influences around them that shaped history. As the latter is the style adopted by Kershaw, it is surprising that he has chosen to write a biography of Hitler.
As Kershaw mentions...

Advantages: Extremely well written and enjoyable read. Disadvantages: none
...Out Of The Hitler Time is the compilation of what was originally three separate books written by Judith Kerr:
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
The Other Way Round
A Small Person Far Away
These three books together follow one family’s story during and after World War Two. The books are based on Judith Kerr’s own experiences, as she tells us in a short piece at the end of the book.
The family in question is a German Jewish family, Anna, her elder brother Max and their parents. The first book follows their flight in the early 1930s from Germany, first to Switzerland then France and finally ending up in Britain. The second book covers the time of the war, with the family in Britain, and the third book tells us of their life afterwards when the children have grown up and made their own lives.
The book is written from Anna’s own...

Advantages: Hilarious insight to Rik Mayall's life as a comedy god! Disadvantages: Can be a bit slow/boring in places - only for a serious Rik fan.
..."Bigger than Hitler better than Christ" - couldn't have put it better myself!!
First off I would like to say:
"If you are not a serious Rik Mayall fan but have seen or enjoyed some of his work this may not be the book you were looking for or expecting!"
Anyway read on and see if you might enjoy this book...
Rik Mayall is very well known in comedy entertainment for The Young Ones, Filthy, Rich and Catflap, The New Statesman and Bottom.
Rik mayall has a fantastically funny sense of humour and personality which to some extents have annoyed a few people over the years, but personally, I love him (figure of speech). Throughout the book Rik's personality is thrown in your face, even from the start with rude remarks about you "the reader", work colleagues from over the years and of course the most noticeable remark...
