... That was about 2 weeks ago when I got my first initial craving (in 2004) for a Hoegaarden, a beer that is rarely surpassed in its combination of fine flavor and thirst quenchability.

...The Style Hoegaarden is categorized as a Belgian white ale, in fact it’s considered to be the modern day pioneer and benchmark of the style. Many are familiar with the unfiltered wheat beers of Germany known as Hefeweizens, which have been commercially popularized in the United States by Pyramid and Widmer. White ale is Belgium’s interpretation of the same style, where it is referred to as “wit.” Wit translates as white and refers to the pale, almost ... ...The town of Hoegaarden is in the northeast of Belgium and once boasted over 30 wheat beer brewers, but by the 1950’s all had closed. Pierre Celis lived next door to the last of the Belgian white ale breweries and had helped make the beer as a teenager. In 1966 he revived the style when he opened his own brewery and named the beer Hoegaarden. The beer, originally intended for the local market, soon became a worldwide success, before being acquired ...

A Marketing Man’s Dream!
Yep that’s me! Offer me a box of beers with a branded glass and I’ll rip your arm off. Never mind that I don’t really know what I’m buying, magpie instincts take over and it’s in the trolley and I’m legging it to the till. To be fair to me I had read a couple of reviews of this beer before and thought it sounded different to my usual so decided to experiment so it wasn’t quite the usual impulse but the ‘heading for the till’ ... ...isn’t it)
So I gets it home and stick some in the fridge and settle back to read the info on the remaining bottles and box. Yes, this particular offer comes in a neat box with four 330ml bottles and a nice branded glass, which helps release the flavour of the beer. At least that’s what it claims, at £4.45 (a whole quid dearer than Asda when I left it on the shelf, damn fool) it had better work. It’s a Belgian Beer from the Brabant Province where ...

...my op on Hoegaarden.
Hoegaarden is a wheat beer. That is, it's cloudy and brewed from wheat not barley. That gives normal wheat beers a slight odd taste that Mrs Saturn and I have adored since our honeymoon (don't ask). This is where Hoegaarden parts company from the mainstream, if wheat beers are mainstream. a) it comes from Belgium and most wheat beers (Weizen) come from Germany.
b) it is flavoured, most obviously with what seems to be coriander ... ...quite mellow and honeyed.
Hoegaarden (the brewers) have been pushing hard for the last couple of years. Even my favourite pub (The Wasdale Head Inn in Wasdale, oddly) sells buckets of it to hardened walkers and serious climbers. Marketing is the key thing here. Hoegaarden glasses are enormous, a pint looks like two pints so you can look manly when you quaff it, and quaff it I do. I have to say that it has almost displaced Guinness as my favourite ...

WHAT IS WIT BEER?
Belgian Witbier is a traditional type of ‘wheat’ beer or Bière Blanche made in the wheat-growing Brabant region east of Brussels. Wheat beers were common all over Europe before barley became the dominant grain in brewing. In Germany and Belgium, wheat beers never totally vanished. This style of beer was revived in the 1960’s by ... ...used. The actual recipe for Hoegaarden White is a well-kept secret. This traditional brew can be traced back to the middle ages.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Initially beer making in Hoegaarden was the preserve of monks who had been making wine and beer since medieval times. Historical records suggest that these traditional wheat beers were intensely sour. In the early days of beer production before hops became universally used to flavour, herbs and spices ...

...spirits I always noticed that Hoegaarden White Beer was listed as the top rated brand of beer on Ciao.
My inquisitivness finally got the better of me and I decided to finally try this beer out for myself and find out what all the hype was about and why this beer was being praised so lavishly.
I picked up some from Tesco's this afternoon and here's by appraisal and report.
The History of Hoegaarden White
----------------------------------
This ... ...especially those presented with sediment. Hoegaarden is a region in Belgium that is rich in soil and castle farms and is a famous area for growing of wheat and sugar beet. Way back in 1700 the region boasted of 30 breweries and became a major brewing center that supplied many neighbouring European communities. In the early 1960's one Pieter Celis, who was a milkman and born in the village, decided to revive the white beer brewing tradition and it ...

...A Belgium Dark Red Brown beer with an Alcohol content of 8.8%
The first time I had this was with my brother-in-law on a lazy cycling holiday in a bar by the canal in Belgium. After 2, 3 or was it 4 beers this came out as one of the favourites. I enjoy Belgium beers but they are better if they are sampled in situ or at least that what I tell my wife.
Forbidden Fruit (FB) is brewed using roasted barley malt, Hoegaarden yeast, coriander and dried orange peel. Sounds disgusting to the beer/none beer drinkers out there but it's got a great taste an although I'm a little biased my wife likes it even though she prefers the lagers!
It's a highly aromatic beer (spicy clove like mulled wine) with a unique sweet dry taste tonnes of summer fruits and a hint of smoked wood. The more common HoegaardenWhite (which is making an appearance...

Advantages: Different to other lagers, very refreshing! Disadvantages: A bit pricey!
...feeling the effects!
The only disadvantage of Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc is the price. Your average pint down the pub will cost you a minimum of about £2.65 (I have not seen it anywhere for less, but could be wrong), and often more. Also it is not as widely available as many other brands of more well known beer. If you cannot find it in any of the pubs in your local town but wish to try some white beer, you could try the more common Hoegaarden (available in Wetherspoons chain pubs), or can find the bottled version down your local off licence or supermarket (bit cheaper getting it this way!).
Evaluation: Great tasting refreshing beer with an interesting fruity twist and the smoothness of Kronenbourg, highly recommended and well worth the extra cost!...
