"Gal Yuh Give Mi The Tightest..."

It seems as though every now and again the Reggae community needs a bit of a leg up to get a little commercial success. People will be quick to say that it’s doing well with Jamaican artists like Mavado, Vybz Kartel and other musicians who have seen a fair bit of mainstream success as of late, but those are both Dancehall acts. With the tie-in with the rap-like vocal delivery (strange as Dancehall was the direct influence to Hip Hop), Dancehall’s success in the urban US and UK market has been holding strong, but Reggae’s been out-of-style for some time. Serani may have done a little something for it with “No Games”, but it seems as though Reggae’s success has finally been rejuvenated with Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh”.

“Hold Yuh” stands out as one of the best tracks of its sort from recent times. A real dedication to classic bass-driven recordings from Lovers Rock’s heyday, the song is an intimate one and made to bring couples together. The seductive grooves are goose bump-inducing and make it feel special each time it drops. Gyptian’s warming vocals over the top of this are then finishing touch to the some soothing instrumentals. Gyptian’s misleading patois and risqué lyrics mean that the recording has been noted for the controversy created by it. When he refers to a tight... something, if he really means ‘hold’ or something else very similar is questionable, but it makes it even more worth listening closely to.

As an underground artist, Gyptian’s success in Jamaica had been quite marginalised. His approach is noted for its throwback qualities from went back to the classic days when Lovers Rock was popular, but it’s hard to shine when people are still more in-tune with the harder Dancehall material. After recording a number of mildly-successful tunes, this one dropped and he was quick to remix it by getting a feature from Little Miss Hype - Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj is the woman of the moment and so it’s only right that he should turn to her first as a vocalist to aid him. There’s no way that he would have been capable of garnering a much attention if he had opted for a Jamaican artist to help him out on the remix, and so with the increased attention he makes a pure hit even better. Nicki Minaj tops things off. She commands with conviction as she returns to her roots (as someone born in Trinidad) and toasts over the track. Her rhymes are always exciting and this is no different as she gives a rougher edge to a great soulful piece.

This track is found on a 2010-released album going by the name of “Hold You”. The release is his third overall and clearly bound to see much more attention than any other he’s put out to date.
