The older I get the more of an internet junkie I become. I am surprised I haven't developed RSI in my mouse finger! I would like to say it's the result of my inquiring librarian's mind but to be honest it's more due to other factors such as the increasing occurrence of senior moments (all those times I see a face I recognise on telly and can't put a name to it or recall where I've seen that face before), to rose-tinted nostalgia moments when I have to research places I have been, people I have known and even songs that I sang, to increasing nosiness (it's my electronic equivalent of twitching the net curtains) and to the simple fact that I just don't get out enough! And when I am 'compus mentis' I might even embark on a little work related research too but these moments are increasingly rare because frankly I get easily bored!

Now if you are going to spend time searching the web for gems you might as well get paid for it and this is where the site, Homepages Friends, enriches my life! They pay me 2p for every search - not a fortune - but as my old Gran used to say, " Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves" and "Small fishes are sweet". Just how did I spring from such a sensible ancestor? But I digress! Are ramblings and digressions also a sign of increasing years?

Before I nod off again, I must document some of the more boring details! Homepages Friends is a privately owned commercial organisation based in Wrexham and a subsidiary of White Box Holdings, a marketing company founded in 2004. The service they offer is completely free and they share the revenue generated by your searches 50/50. As far as I can see there is no catch!

Joining could not be simpler! All you need is a computer with Internet Explorer or Mozilla/Firefox browsers. Once you have completed and submitted a a short form with your name, country and email address , you will receive a welcome email which includes your username, password and further instructions on how to enter your payment details within your account. By following the email instructions you can log on, complete your payment details and the process is complete.

The minimum payment level is £20 and payments are made every 30 days. You can elect to have this paid into your bank account or via Paypal. They reckon average earnings are around £50 a year and I think this is quite accurate. I joined up some six weeks ago and my earnings are now creeping up to £7.
The only draw back for me is that you have to use their preferred search engine, Yahoo. I am a Google girl born and bred but Yahoo gives reasonable results and you can always use Google as a back up. I did find one point confusing at first (but then I am easily confused). Search results open in separate window which pops up on top when the search button is clicked, If you minimize this window (rather than closing it) before doing another search you may think your search button hasn't produced any results because the results appear in the minimized window! Of course this would be perfectly obvious to younger members but it took me an aggravatingly long time to suss it out!

I think the site is still in its infancy and not all the options are up and running as yet. To be honest I am not sure what these other aspects will involve. The tabs on your home page will take you to :-
My Gadgets - where you will be able to chose from an increasing number of gadgets and control them?
My Shops - where apparently you can earn cashback for shopping but I can't work out how this operates: there are no retailers listed and searches do not really come up with recognizable results so I am sticking to Mutual Points at present. I did send an email enquiry about this but received no response.
My Bookmarks - apparently you can save your favourite sites to your homepage and navigate there in one simple click. I don't use this - far too complicated for my shrinking little grey cells.
My Blog - This part of the site is still under construction so that will be something for me to look forward to. Told you I should get out more!

Of course, as with all such money spinners you can increase your earnings by introducing friends. Every time your friends search they earn and you do too and when their friends search everybody earns in ever decreasing circles! I am a right Billy No Mates so have not had the opportunity to explore this aspect yet. I wouldn't ever tout for business but if you are interested in being my friend you could always can drop me a message in my guest book. If you catch me on a good day there's a chance you will receive a rational reply! No pressure of course but I am very nearly a pensioner!! Go independently to if you must and if you want to make an old lady even grumpier than usual! Yes it's one of the advantages of age that people positively expect you to be grumpy! I'm rambling again!

And that's about all I have the strength to write at present. Before I nod off again I must just put the washing up in the oven and my ready meal in the dishwasher ….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
