It's true. The only person on the planet whose housekeeping is worse than mine is my mother but despite this I would LIKE to live in a clean, organised and well run home. As Mum was never able to teach me how to achieve this I found Home Comforts the perfect solution ... or inspiration, at least.

The level of information is overwhelming - this isn't a pleasant style bible a la Martha Stewart, this is an indepth how-to manual that gets down and dirty on cleaning, chemicals and housecare. Definitely the Encyclopedia Britannica of the modern home, I'm tempted to recommend buying the hardback (it's a keeper) but you might find it difficult to lift. Even a supremely competent housekeeper is sure to find something new in the very technical chapters on all the materials that make up a home. The sections are logically arranged, starting with a basic introduction to cleaning and housecare, followed by a room by room breakdown of equipment and function, then the more technical reference chapters on individual materials to assist with purchasing decisions when renovating, decorating, furnishing and lighting a home. There are also additional chapters to highlight specialist considerations when hiring help and having older or very young visitors. The chapters dealing with legal issues and safety have been re-written for the UK home so all the information is relevant.

It is a relief to find that this American author has entirely side-stepped the Stay-At-Home-Mum (SAHM) vs. Working Woman argument that often intrudes into religious areas in the USA. The introduction of the book that describes how this qualified lawyer came to embrace her inner homebody (without giving up the day job) is charming and I found it a lot easier to relate to than the more common "oops, I somehow got stuck at home with the kids". So it will even be useful to those who resist the Stepford Wife ideal on principle.
