Its only made of paper
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: none
Gosh these simple cheap paper light shades take me back a few years. The love nest (we shared the attic room) I shared with my boyfriend in a student house in the early seventies had the identical shade to the one in this picture. The reason why? Yes it was dirt cheap. The modern equivalent is only £2.99 for a 12, a larger 12 inch £3.49inch ball shade the larger 16 inch £3.99 available at http://www.discount-lighting-store.co.uk/subprod/paper-lamp-shades-0001801.aspx...
... ...you can buy more elaborate paper shades some different shaped ones Argos has a set of three Sphere, cube and prism shaped. For £4.89.
Paper Disney character shades can be bought for your children?s rooms for about a fiver each.
These light shades are quite good as they are quite neutral will not clash with the décor in the room. Our room was purple and orange with pre-Raphaelite and band posters on the wall.
Since I am familiar with paper lampshades ...

Puts Its Competition In The Shade!
Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, look good Disadvantages: You could put your finger through them if you aren't careful
...I was browsing through the Argos book one afternoon just having a little look at things to buy, and I stumbled across these in the lighting section. It looked like they didn't have a circular fitting like most lightshades do, so we thought for £4.41, it was worth a try just to cover up the bare hanging bulbs we have been stuck with! After queueing for yonks in Argos, they handed me a lightweight package with 3 flat lampshades inside it. I was a bit ... ...in the world, but nevertheless we took them home.
I unwrapped them from the usual yards and yards of cellophane you get with these things. There was an instruction sheet showing you how to assemble them (although you could easily do so without the aid of this!), 3 flat, unassembled lampshades and 3 metal rectangular shaped things. I had a look at each shade and decided just to assemble all of them at once. To assemble, simply insert the metal shape ...

Illuminating the Night with Light in Style
Advantages: Powerful, lightweight, highly practical, stylish and excellent value for money. Disadvantages: A bit too strong. Struggles with thicker books.
...go – it wasn’t as if I was searching for something perfect – I just wanted a serviceable book light to allow me to read at night when my wife preferred to go to sleep. However, my quest for a reliable book light stretches back three Christmases and two birthdays and I have a pile of rejects and failures that would justify a car boot sale table all by themselves. So it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I took this little gadget ... ...company called That Company Called IF (http://www.thatcompanycalledif.com) founded in 1996 and based in North Yorkshire. The product comes in a trim, form fitted plastic box and is available in various colours (Purple, Pink, White, Orange, Green, Grey and Blue). The only instructions you need are printed on the box, but the product is intuitive to use. I plumped for the orange version. The housing is in hard plastic, with a matte finish and is hinged ...

And there was Light !
Advantages: Light on tap. Disadvantages: Nothing major.
JML seem to have been hitting the headlines lately with the Ped egg, well I have never tried a Ped Egg but I can vouch for the JML Stick up bulb.
We have a large store in a neighbouring town called `Home Bargains` and in that store you can find all sorts of gadgets and gimmicks, some far better than others but at least it is fun trying them all out.
We went in to buy a small step stool and came out with a stick up light bulb, so that wasn't bad ... ...looking for !
The JML stick up light bulb is a simple idea that does work well, it comes in two parts. There is a horseshoe shaped plate that has a large sticky pad attached to the back of it and that part acts as the holder for the light bulb.
The sticky pad is quite selective and you will find that it will only stick to what it wants to, so after trying it in many different positions only to find that is just `slid` off The Other Half managed ...

GU10 CFL is cost effective but takes to warm up
Advantages: Cost effective Disadvantages: Short warm up delay
When I think about how much wattage I am using to light my flat and how often I forget to turn lights off I am shocked. This bulb is equivalent to a 50W incandescent bulb but saves 78% of the energy. These bulbs operate on 230V so avoiding the need and the possible wear of low quality 12V transformers. There are a couple of versions the cool (4000K) & warm white (3000K), the cool white might work in sterile conditions like kitchens and displays but ... ...living rooms and bed rooms. The bulb produces usable light instantly but as with most CFLs it takes about 60 seconds to fully warm up and produce the maximum light output. Because of the energy usage when these warm up they are not ideal for short use applications but better used for long periods of continuous use. These bulbs are designed to have a useful life a lot longer than an incandescent bulb and so far I haven't used one to the end of its ...
