Last weekend I laid a new floor in my bathroom. I used these foot square lino type tiles bought from one of our leading superstores. They worked out £1.98 for 6 tiles which cover about 3 sq metres. I figured out that I nedded 6 packets of those from the value range.
Thing with these is that you have to lay them onto a flat surface really, probably not best straight on top of floorboards. So I bought some hardboard, only thin stuff and worked out at £1.50 for a four foot piece and bought four of those to cover the floor with first of all.
The tricky bit is cutting the shapes around the toilet and sink pedestal, but once the floor is down then it's fairly easy to lay the tiles. I found it best to start in the middle of the floor and work your way out. So measure the floor across and down and get a central point to lay the first tile.
When you come to the edges, the tiles fit straight under the skirting boards, so you don't have to be too neat when cutting. Always best to cut with a stanleyknife and when cutting circles for the central heating pipes use a sharp pair of scissors. Getting angles around the toilet and stuff is tricky but do it the best you can and maybe fill the gaps in afterwards with some wood glue or similar.
So, in all it worked out at around £16 including a bag of nails to nail the boards down first of all. Also, when nailing, be careful of the pipes under the floorboards. I bought some 3/4 inch nails so that they would only sit in the floorboards and not go through to the other side.
Looks really effective and very similar to wood, but the only differences really are the difference in cost and it doesn't quite feel the same when walking on it. Just hope it still looks good in years to come, as i've heard some people say that the glue wears off after a while and they start to peel off. Well recommended anyway.

have you had any previous experience with laying floorboards before. I ask because I'm considering DIY as the way to go to give my place a new look but not sure what to do
