Somehow in the ‘heat wave’ which lasted all of 3 days last week, we managed to use our BBQ, and pretend like it was summer for a day! I’m actually not the biggest fan of BBQ’s, I’ll happily go... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

The product An 8kg bag of individually wrapped 1kg parcels of charcoal. Each parcel of charcoal is covered in wrapping which is coated to allow it to be lit at one edge and then light the whole wrapping and burn the charcoal making it simple to start off a barbecue. The packaging Each 1kg parcel is individually wrapped in wrapping and these are then contained in a large bag. The bag is black with a chilli pepper on the front which is a little different from the usual charcoal packaging which is good. The packaging is quite simple but it's easy to understand and spot in the store which is ... more

Advantages Advantages No mess, no more lighter fluid, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit dearer than normal charcoal but well worth it.

I tried a gas bbq for a couple of years on the advice of a few people I know saying that they didn't taste any different than a proper bbq, and I suppose they don't really taste that different and they are certainly much easier and cleaner to set up and use. However about a year ago we decided to knock the kitchen and dining room together and this resulted in a huge pile of bricks. I had always fancied a brick bbq and decided to set about building one with the bricks that I had, this obviously then resulted in the gas bbq getting tipped and we were back to the mess of charcoal and fire ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly more money than normal charcoal

Somehow in the ‘heat wave’ which lasted all of 3 days last week, we managed to use our BBQ, and pretend like it was summer for a day! I’m actually not the biggest fan of BBQ’s, I’ll happily go round to somebody else’s house but I can’t stand how time consuming they are and how much cleaning is needed afterwards! It’s worse than Sunday Roast! With this in mind, any product that makes the process quicker is going to be a hit with me, so when my husband came back from Home base with the instant light charcoal I was pretty impressed. We don’t really have a BBQ as such, more of a load of bricks ... more

One of the most aggravating things about barbecuing is waiting for the charcoal to get hot. You can accelerate this by using fluid, lighters etc, but I think they do taint food, however slightly. This product is different, in that it comes sealed in thick paper bags the right size for a small barbecue - e.g. the hibachi variety or a 18in diameter free standing one. You sit the whole bag in the middle of the pan, light the bag and as the bag burns, the impregnated charcoal collapses into a neat heap and ignites properly. After a few minutes, it is alight enough to spread it out a bit. It is ... more

Homebase have manufactured an instant lighting charcoal which works excellently and is considerable faster and quicker at lighting and therefore cooking barbequed foods than the traditional charcoals are. One kilogram bag retails at approximately £5. The purchaser is able to burn the charcoal with ease and great efficiency and without the usual mess which is associated with this. Bag is placed on top of the barbeque and then set fire to the bag and its contents. I do NOT remove the charcoals from the bag beforehand as this is unecessary in MY OPINION. Charcoals will instantly set alight ... more
