If you have ever thought about building your own dream home then I can recommend a great magazine to help you explore the dream further. It's called Homebuilding & Renovating and is available at a newsagent for £2.95.
This magazine comes out monthly and each issue looks at individuals who have built their own home, some almost totally by themselves. The articles go into great detail and always give the building costs, problems encountered and the savings normally made by going down the self-build route.
Most of the stories featured prove that self-build can be a very cost-effective way to own your own home. Another important aspect of self-build is that you can make your home much more eco-friendly and energy-efficient than the usual house developer will, thereby helping save the planet and also your hard-earned cash via lower heating bills.
Great advice is provided in the form of well-written articles covering most aspects of self-building explaining the pitfalls and the opportunities. There is a regular series where experts help readers select building plots and this is reported with details, prices and expert opinions on site selection.
I find the magazine very inspirational and informative and have decided to build a home of my own at some point. One of the best features of this magazine is that it proves that it can be done and that in fact more and more people are self-building in the UK. Some building societies are supportive and allow you to finish building a new house while still living in the old.
The publishers also run a self-build exhibition at the NEC (happening this week 8 - 11 March 2001) which is a great way to see a lot of relevant products and new technology for self-building. I've been to a few of these and find them very useful especially as they run seminars explaining the whole process of self-build.
