It works ok for a while, however it is very specific to size. I am very skinny and not very tall. It would continue to massage up past my neck, so there would be a few seconds where I felt nothing at all and just waited for it to come back down. The same issue would come about when it was going side to side as it would would go far out to either side of me. I always had strong back pains and decided to try some alternatives to taking pain killers. First I bought one of percussion massager handheld also by Homedics. I paid £38 for this and honestly wasn't happy at all with massage provided. Went back to Comet in last years's Boxing day sales and tried this chair and could feel the massive difference!
