I'm going to write this opinion from my own experience. I am not an expert on homeopathy but I am a believer.

I started taking treatments when I was about 15. I had asthma and severe rhinitis (spelling?) which left me unable to leave the house without a box of tissues. My rhinitis is now almost non-existent and I only need to take my inhaler about once a month!

If this isn’t enough of a miracle for you I have since contracted a mild form of Chronic Fatigue syndrome (CFS). For those of you that don’t know CFS is a mild form of ME, in my case it means that I tire very easily and if I go beyond my limits I get symptoms which I believed to be tonsillitis for many years and took a large number of penicillin doses in an attempt to cure.

I started at university in London last year and my mother suggested that as I live next door to the Royal Homeopathic Hospital it might be a good idea to see if they could help me with what was always going to be a tough year. I should add that my mother has had two rounds of chemotherapy for two different breast cancers and swears by homeopathic treatments. She mistrusts the tendency to cure with large helpings of drugs as she is only too aware of side effects. My original visit to the homoeopathist was an attempt to find a cure that would prevent me from having to use too many steroids, and as usual she knew best. I should point out that drugs shouldn’t be rejected and you should take what your doctor prescribes with the homeopathic remedy to boost it. My mothers cancer wasn’t cured by the remedy but it did vastly increase her quality of life and is now helping her with osteoporosis among other things.

It’s done the same for me. University can be hard for me at times as the need to concentrate on what I’m reading tires me out and leaves me wrung out and depressed. I’m sensible and am not a clubber, nor do I drink alcohol, but I also feel the need to have some sort of student social life and the remedy has helped enormously.

The first step in getting the treatment is to get a referral from your doctor. Some are likely to be more sympathetic than others, ours was brilliant! Then you can go ahead and book an appointment at the Royal Homeopathic which is just off Russel Square in London. The appointment will usually last about half an hour as the homoeopathist will ask a number of questions about your life style and condition which are geared to finding a personal remedy for you. I’m aware that this is something to do with the blend of plant extracts that they use but the specifics are a mystery to me. These extracts are watered down so that only minute traces of the original plant remain and it’s these that do the good. My medication comes in two forms. After every appointment I’m given a little bottle of clear liquid which I take in three doses. I also get a bottle of tiny sugar balls which have been dosed with the extracts. I take two of these pills a day which is no chore as they taste nice, I just have to remember to take them before I clean my teeth at night! Each bottle lasts me a few months, when it runs out I know it’s time for my next appointment.

The results started to show after just a few months. I went from having my bouts of ‘tonsillitis’ at least twice a month to less than once a month. This may not sound like much but it makes a big difference to me as a bout of illness like this leaves me knocked out for days or even weeks. It was also my homoeopathist that suggested that the problem may not be tonsillitis at all and that I should try not taking the penicillin and see what happened. Sure enough the bouts clear up just as quickly with or without penicillin which saves a lot of hassle and will mean an improvement in my health in the long run. The most important result for me, though, is an overall improvement in my quality of life as a student. I still only club occasionally but I can stay up later in my hall of residence and don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. I also noticed the difference around exam time, I came out with a 2:1 last year which I would have found much more difficult without the treatment as I am not able to cram at the last minute.

This summer I became much more lax in taking the remedy as I could sleep all I liked and was not under any stress. I even lost the bottle of pills for a while and even though my life was easier I resorted back to the symptoms of exhaustion and lethargy I had before. I doubt that homeopathy only gives a placebo effect, my condition is real and I have a very positive attitude towards it and my life, it is not the end of the world and I don’t give it that much thought, I just stick to my routine. And even if the only benefits are all in my mind and my mothers’ mind I couldn’t care less. It makes me feel better and happier and that’s all I need to know. I certainly havent lost anything.

I would recommend homeopathic remedies wholeheartedly for anyone who suffers from a chronic illness and is prepared to try something new. It may also help those recovering from treatment. Good luck with it.
