How Does Homeopathic Remedies Work? -------------------------------------
Homeopathy works by treating a person as a whole, or holistically, so although presenting symptoms will be looked at, the individual person, his or her mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health – will be taken into account, too.
Homeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like” (from the Latin similia similibus curentur), meaning the treatment given is similar in substances to the illness it is helping. Although it has roots that go back many centuries, it began in its present form approximately 200 years ago.
The History of Homeopathy --------------------------
It was the Greek physician Hippocrates who was the first person to understand the principle of treating the body with a remedy which will produce similar symptoms to the ailment suffered. However, it was the German physician Samuel Hahnemann who first developed homeopathy as it is known and practised today.
There are more than 2,000 homeopathic remedies available with new ones continually being added. The remedies are made from animal, vegetable and mineral sources, which can include bee sting, snake venom, poison ivy leaves, onions, coffee beans, and daisies.
However, the amounts used are so minute that they cannot be tasted or side effects experienced, however poisonous, or toxic the substance might be. Homeopathic remedies usually take the form of powder; granules, pilules, or tablets so are easy to take.
In the 19th century a German physician Wilhelm Schussler introduced twelve minerals that he thought to be vital to human health as he believed that many diseases were caused by a deficiency of one or more of the 12 vital minerals. A deficiency in each salt would manifest as particular symptoms.
For instance, when a person’s body is lacking in calcarea phosphorica (Calc. Phos.), it would show up as teething problems or an inability absorb nutrients properly, whilst lack of magnesium phosphate (Mag. Phos.) would affect ones nerve endings and muscles. Schussler found that by replacing the missing mineral with a minute dose of the tissue salt, the problem was corrected.
The Twelve Tissue Salts -----------------------
The following is a listing of the twelve tissue salts, which were introduced by Schussler – all of which are available from Boots the Chemists or your local health food shop – the display stand usually lists the aliments which each salt will treat, which is more than one per salt:

As mentioned earlier, there are more than 2,000 homeopathic remedies available, which include:
Aconite – relieves acute condition, which begin suddenly and after shock, or exposure to abrupt changes of climate, skin irritations, and fears.
Allium – relieves stream eyes and nose; headaches, burning pain, neuralgia and pains that move from side to side, commonly from left to right.
Anacardium Orientale – relieves constricted pain, plugged ear, nose or back passage and inferiority complexes.
Antimonium Tartaricum – relieves chest conditions and gastric or bowel complaints.
Apis – relieves hot, stinging pain. Smarting, watery swellings, which are sensitive to the touch. Fever with dry skin, violent headache, and lack of thirst.
Argentum Niticum – relieves fears, anxiety, phobias, palpitations, sweating, mental exhaustion, digestive complaints brought on by nerves and other tension. Problems due to over consumption of sweet, sugary foods and vertigo.
Arnica – relieves bruises, sprains, pains, shock from injury and emotional shock, for instance, after bereavement.
Arsenicum Album - relieves digestive disorders, fears, and anxiety, regular, painful headaches, and problems associated with burning pain.
Aurum Metallicum - relieves depression, ailments accompanied by sensitivity to touch, taste, small, and noise. Vascular complaints.
Baptisia – relieves toxic and septic conditions and acute feverish illnesses.
Baryta Carbonica - relieves enlarged glands, headaches, and slow development.
Belladonna – relieves sudden, violent complaints, with flushing and throbbing due to increased circulation. Ailments, which include sensitivity to light, noise, pressure, and touch. Fever with staring eyes and dilated pupils.
Bryonia – relieves acute complaints with slow onset, painful with movement and thirst. Also ailments accompanied by dryness of the mouth, lips, eyes and chest.
Calcarea Carbonica – relieves aches and pains in the bones and joints, slow development of teeth and bones, excessive sweating, fears and anxieties.

Silica – relieves conditions caused by low immunity due to being malnourished, bone an skin conditions and assists in the expulsion of foreign bodies.

Sulfur – relieves inflamed, itchy skin conditions, digestive complaints, offensive odour, women’s conditions and conditions other remedies do not seem to be helping.

Urtica – relieves stinging, burning conditions of the skin, rheumatic pain and neuralgia.
Taking the Remedies --------------------
It is important that when using homeopathic remedies, only one remedy is taken at a time. The remedies must not be touched but should be placed on a teaspoon and then put under the tongue. Alternatively, tip them into the cap of the bottle to transfer to the mouth.
The remedies used to be supplied in small canisters, however, the ones I have purchased recently, have been supplied in a new type packaging, which allows distribution of one tablet at a time which can be “shot” directly under the tongue, thus ensuring that the salt is not touched.
The remedies must be taken in a “clean mouth” at least thirty minutes after meals. If you need to take them sooner, then you must rinse out your mouth first with water. Unfortunately, it is recommended that you should avoid alcoholic drinks and cigarettes, spicy or minty foods whilst taking the remedies.
They must be stored in a cool dark place away from strong smells such as air fresheners, essential oils or perfumes – store them in the original packaging in which they were purchased. If stored correctly, they should last for at least five years.
Who Can Be Treated --------------------
Homeapathic remedies can be used on the young and old, and even on your cat and dog or other household pet. However, they should only be used in the treatment of animals after consultation with a homeopathic vet has been sought. I recently used Hypericum to treat my cat who had severed the nerves in his back leg – obviously, he could not tell me if it relieved the pain but he did make a quick recovery against the odds set by the vet.
The One Remedy You Should Have ---------------------------------
As with most alternative medicines, there are so many remedies available, each treating different symptoms, however, if you could choose only one remedy for your medicine cabinet, I would suggest that it be Arnica as it is an effective first aid treatment for sprains, strains, and bruising. Internally, it can help control bleeding and stimulates the healing of damaged tissue. It is also useful for the treatment of shock, after either an injury or emotional trauma. It can be used for long-term joint and muscle complains such as osteoarthritis, and can aid external conditions such as eczema and boils – one of my favourite remedies.
