The best bike ever made

Advantages: Speed, comfort, handling, reliability, economy, class
Disadvantages: None

How did Honda do it? Back in 1986 when the VFR750 was first introduced Honda was on the slippery slope to motorcycle oblivion.

They had proved to one and all that they couldn't make a reliable V4 engine. The early eighties V4 engined models, the VF500 and VF750, both blew up if ridden hard, and wore cam chains out at an alarming rate regardless Honda's in line four cylinder bikes were failing in comparison to faster rivals from Suzuki, ...
...The legend has it that Honda unpacked a brand new (dark blue) VFR 750 for him to ride in the race. You could easily spot it on TV, no bright paint job, not even any stickers. He hadn't qualified, and as a consequence he started from the back of the grid. Against full race machinery this standard road bike starting from the back should have had absolutely no chance, no more than someone driving a Ford Mondeo at the back of a Formula 1 car race.

Very Fast Red used bike

Advantages: Fantastic engine, perfect build quality, lack of flashy graphics
Disadvantages: Come on, it's a VFR, there are none. Ok, brakes a bit lacking in feel

The Honda VFR 750 has, in its later forms, been rated as the best all rounder of the two wheel world. How does a used example stack up against the seductive charms of newer flashier models.? I've had mine for 18 months now , it being a late model 750, made just before the fuel injected 800 was produced. It's the bike I got back into biking for, a combination of restrained styling and swiss watch like engineering. The heart of the bike, the wonderful ...
...than the "VFR" and gold Honda badge) makes it a particularly sporty, sleek and classy looking machine. The single sided rear swing arm and black alloys leave the look clean. The bike is physically quite big, and might be a problem in town for the rider of shorter height. At just under 6' I find it very comfortable and the pedals in an ideal relationship to the seat. Also as I can't bend my ankle too far (transit van-ankle-BMW bike sandwich---don't ...

Commuter, tourer and track day tool

Advantages: Can an all rounder do anymore than a VFR?
Disadvantages: Quite heavy

1996 VFR 750 bought second hand a year back. Since then I've done just under 10,000 miles (now 30k on the speedo) which have included regular commuting, touring France, track day at Cadwell Park, advanced training around Wales (two up in the rain) and it has been great on every occassion. Being 166cm (5'5" I think) I find it just a little heavy especially with the top box packed. But generally no problems. I have dropped it 3 times all at stationary ...
...since then I have learnt to get on the bike, slide my right leg right over to the ground and then bring the bike up to vertical - easy when you realize! Extras: Givi top box - ace, Loobman - not bad, GPS mounted to top yoke -ace, carbon can - generally ruins the bottom end so ditch it. Tyres: Bridgestones, Dunlops and Pierrels have all been fine. (Got a puncture in the rear Dunlop - so don't worry it is not that bad on tyres!) Reliability: no ...

VFR Class Speed

Advantages: Cost, speed, reliability, handling, understated
Disadvantages: Can't find any

Acquired this aged and classy machine but a month ago. Its a VFR F of 1989 with braided hoses, 4 into one stainless can and scotoiler, with 39K. It's so well made it feels lots younger. Advantages, smooth power delivery, lovely hydraulic clutch, neutral safe handling and a beguilingly ordinairy image. Torquey engine piles on the power wherever its needed for effortless overtaking. It's rather quiet but with an appealing exhaust burble and the cam ...

Girl on a motorcycle

Advantages: Reliability and all round excellence
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive for a good second hand one

Yes, I know girls on biggish bikes are fairly rare but I bought a VFR 3 years ago and it's one of the best buys I've ever made. I'm quite tall for a girl (5'10") so I don't find the height a problem. I mainly use it for commuting to work (30 mile round trip) and it's never let me down. I haven't done huge amounts of touring, just the odd day, but it's just so great to ride. It's a 1997 model, incidentally, the last year before they made the 800. ...

All your commuter needs for under a monkey.....

Advantages: Cheap, grin factor
Disadvantages: Exhausts

The Yamaha XJ Diversion 600s... Not a bike that pops into every bike riders mind... But in my opinion probably one of the best commuter bikes that your pennies can buy. The "pre-diversion" Yamaha XJ's never seemed to appear on the radar of the biking press. In 1992/93 Yamaha launched the Diversion which appeared in two forms..... the shaft driven 900cc do it all bike and the little brother, chain driven 600cc motorcycle that I have grown to adore. I first bought a 1995 European import Divvy from ebay in early 2004, I had just wedged my Honda VFR750 under a a crash barrier on the A2, money was tighter than the Gladiators spandex and finances and a wife left me with £450.00 to spend. Ebay brought my attention to Diversion 600.. I bought it with 36,000miles, and in need of two tyres. MAINTAINCE In my two years of ownership it ...

Cheap and cheerful way to 140mph

Advantages: Cheap, comfortable, and fast for its age
Disadvantages: Aging and moderately difficult to find parts. Not the best handling bike ever

This Kawasaki is now considered cheap transport, but in its day it was Kawasaki's top sports bike, mixing it in reviews and road tests with lofty models like the Honda VFR750 and Suzuki GSXR750. Sadly at the time it was frankly poor in comparison to either of these bikes. The Honda trounced it in every area, whilst the Suzuki was definitely more sports oriented. Reviews of the time suggested the Kawasaki was outdated as soon as it was introduced, leading to something of a sales flop, a short model life, and some real low priced bargains. The GPX 750 was introduced to the UK market as the replacement for the GPZ900R, a bike that ultimately outlasted it by a good ten years. So what was wrong with it? And how does it shape up now? The answer to the first question is not much; it was just two years late to market. The other ...

Legend

Advantages: Stunning motorcyle investment .
Disadvantages: None

Sometimes in life a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. We've all had that feeling of "I've gotta have it" and for me it was in the summer of 1988. Honda had just introduced the VFR750R-K better known as the RC30 and it was taking the world by storm. Both on the race track and on the roads, the RC30 in the hands of Joey Dunlop and Carl Fogerty to name but two, kicked butt for five years or so. A legend was born. These motorcycles were all hand built, each one receiving personal attention and it showed. The styling was years ahead of it's time, even today, 16 years on, you'd think it a current model. I just had to have one, even though in 1989 it was selling for £9500, that wasn't going to be a deterent, it just made the machine more exclusive and exotic. Twin headlights, red white and blue livery, and distinctive single sided rear swing ...
