The 2000 Honda SP-1 is THE perfect bike! It handles superbly, looks fantastic and performs like a dream. What other bike has performed so well in the World Superbikes in its very first season? I first rode one in March 2000 and, from the moment I sat on it, it felt perfect - it responds well to my riding style (which is by no means perfect I'm sure). And the new, electronic dashboard!? Well, it looks like something out of Star Trek - perfect for a gadget man like myself. Overall, it has got to be the best looking, best handling bike I've had the pleasure of riding. Well done Honda for producing a response to the Yamaha R1!
Advantages: A head turner, good looking machine Disadvantages: Very Expensive to tune
Well when this bike reached the shores of the UK, they were more sort after than gold. Now I keep on hearing the same old story about how much they cost to tune up for racing purposes.
Oh yes you can buy an aftermarket system and power commander this does help, you gain a few extra hp but thats about it.
HRC (Japan) had a list out not long ago with all the parts needed to make this bike a winner, ok if you are a rich S.O.B. but if your not, trying ... ...people off the idea.
These bike dont like to run in built up areas, they tend to be a little jerky on the throttle.
The rear seat flap is still a problem and can fly off as and when it feels like it.
Watch out if you clean your bike with a power washer as the paint on the wheels comes off very easily, it can come off if you use some wheel cleaning products (not mentioning any names).
The suspension is heavily oversprung and needs looking into.
